Experience Wanted! Queensland, Australia

Hi there,
I am new to CF so I thought I'd put my name out there.

My name is Sebastian, I am 20 years old and live on a small island off North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, Australia. I am looking for any kind of slave work crew experience on any kind of boat to later help me with a job in the fishing industry eg. a few days up the coast would be great just to get a feel for things as I have had little to no experience on a boat over 5m.

I am open to time lengths and obviously willing to pay for my own expenses simply searching for someone who might need a free crew member to help out.

Cheers,
Seb

Hello Sebastion,
i was a commercial fisherman for many years.
The best way to get on a boat is to seek them out at the wharves. If you are persistent you will get on.
If you are game there's always the Gulf of Carpentaria if you want to play with the big boys. Call Raptis in Brisbane.
Good luck!

Yeah I think I might head down to Sanctuary Cove this weekend for a chat to some of the guys down there. Raptis skippers will only go for the boys with experience and I missed the season anyway :/ Can only keep trying I guess.

Re: Experience Wanted! Queensland, Australia

Hi Seb,
i was in Mooloolabah last week - saw heaps of fishing boats up there. To get a job, it's just a matter of being persistent. Keep fronting up in person.
Also, you can volunteer to be a "tucker tripper" - work for food. If you are serious, this is your best chance of getting a paid job in the shortest amount of time.
Make sure you get a "Record of Service" book to get all your sea time officially logged.
Be careful what you ask for (lol).
Be interested to know how you get on.

Great,
Haven't heard of that term before (tucker tripper) aha but like you said it is a foot in the door. I just printed out the application form for the ROS so I'll take it in next week. I will keep nagging some of the old boys friends who have spent time on boats to help me out.
