31 years, Australian Male, ex-Navy Submariner

Greetings All,
My name is Daniel and I am a 31 year old guy that has recently left the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Squadron.
I will be heading to Hawaii at the end of December 2013 to spend time with friends. From there I will head to the mainland of America to purchase a boat of my own to hopefully sail back to Australia.
Before I do this I would like to brush up on many skills to thoroughly prepare me for my trip.
I would like to crew with people who own boats around the 25 to 35 foot range for either delivery or liveaboard scenarios to get up to speed and really hit the ground running before I take the plunge with a boat of my own.
I am prepared to pay all of my own costs in getting to your boat, and back to wherever I plan to buy my own boat. I will pay all of my own food/alcohol costs and a percentage of most other general costs. I would expect to negotiate slightly different terms if delivering. But I am very flexible.
I am a qualified mechanic by trade and have spent many months at sea on long deployments in very confined spaces.
I have a current STCW95 Sea Training Certificate. First Aid Training. Heaps of watch keeping and engineering experience.
I am a fit, healthy, clean and respectful person. I am single and have no kids.
I sailed the Apostle Islands last year with friends on Lake Superior. And I'm a pretty keen windsurfer.
Due to my American Visa expiry date I need to make sure that I am inside America no later than the end of April 2014. So I have a few months up my sleeve to hang out and help you with most things.
I would prefer to sail out of Hawaii, Mexico, San Diego, Florida or The Caribbean. But I would consider just about anything if it sounded like it would be good.
Please contact me if you think you might like an extra hand.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am thinking about buying a Cape Dory 28 or something similar. I would appreciate any and all advice that people would care to give.

Hi Danny,
Your trip sounds awesome and something that I would definitely like to talk to you about.
I'm currently in Hawaii and a little bit busy but will get back to you in the next day or two with a proper reply.
Thanks for getting in touch with me.

Re: 31 years, Australian Male, ex-Navy Submariner

Just letting everyone know that I'm still keen and still kicking around.
I'm currently in Hawaii on the island of Kauia. I will be in San Diego on the 29th of January to look at some boats for sale. If anyone needs a hand or would like to offer any advice on sailing/buying a boat in that area I would be glad to hear it.
I don't have any plans after San Diego. If I don't find any boats I like I may head to either Mexico or Florida.
Regards,
Dan.

Re: 31 years, Australian Male, ex-Navy Submariner

Hi Dan
I am currently in Cartagena Colombia, and looking to sail to panama in the next few weeks. After that, it's through the canal and on to the Marquesas. I have a 36 ft Vancouver cutter, w/ all the safety gear, SSB, wind vane steering and autopilot, wind gen, solar panels etc. I've had it 3 years, and it sails great - went up to NY and back to Florida, then down through the Bahamas, DR, then here. Lived in Australia 3.5 years, where I did my Ph.D in marine bio at james Cook Univ. in Townsville. If you'd like to sail to panama via the San Blas islands, go through the canal or continue all the way to FP (about 35 days), let me know. Planning on making my way to NZ, AUS, and Solomon's eventually, but that's down the road a way. let me know if you want more info about me/boat etc. Cheers, Phil

Hi Dan - just checking back with you to see if you are still interested in the Pacific trip - last I heard you were going to SD soon to look at a boat. Let me know - nothing is confirmed here yet. Regards, Phil

Re: 31 years, Australian Male, ex-Navy Submariner

Hi, Daniel. I'm am on a live-aboard 33' Morgan that I purchased used (1977) last year. It sounds as though you might be a great fit for an initial short sail from Key Largo to Marathon, with possibility and potential for longer sail(s) depending on your timing and availability. Please advise via my email at "t w baker three four at yahoo dot com" and hope to hear from you. Still in California? Tim

Thank you to everyone who replied and got in touch with me to discuss possible sailing adventures.

I am currently in San Diego and in the process of buying a boat here.

I wish everyone the best of luck in finding suitable sailing companions.

Cheers.
