Want To Buy: Yacht Wanted . . . Australia

I am looking to buy a yacht in Australia.

I have searched on and off for a while and am struggling to put my finger on the right boat so thought I would ask all of you for some help.

I am happy with somethin that needs some work as I have a year to play with it.

Ultimate aim is coastal cruising east coast of Australia.
I have broken down my criteria as follows:
I don't mean to offend anybody but these are my choices.

Must have:

Monohull
36 - 40 feet
Room for wife and 2 kids (and me) to cruise.
6'1" headroom and bunk length.
Classic lines (think s&s)
U shaped galley
Timber or glass
Full or fin keel

Nice to have:

Large tanks
Tiller
No teak decks
Some exposed woodwork


Must not have

Major structural issues (happy with cosmetic)
No centre cockpit
No double ender
That horrible diesel smell of a neglected boat that makes everyone ill within 3 seconds of going below.

Price range: up to $A 125000.00

New Zealand seems to have far more boats that fit my criteria(eg townson talent markii) and may have to look at one from there and import.

So throw me links, details of your boat because I am getting know where

There is so many boats on boatpoint.com.au in the 36-40ft 90k-120k region, that I think it may just be information overload. I suffer that . Obvioulsy, I didnt measure the bunks on these lol. But I would recomend you email your criteria of to some of the bigger brokerages and see what happens ( Brays, vicsail, australian boat sales etc.)

One final thought. Consider the Columbia 34 also. They have internal space larger than a lot of 38 footers.

bad news from New Zealand !!!...i've looked at boats here for more than a year,don't bother...they're OLD,overpriced and not really what i'd consider "sea worthy"...curiously my last boat was built for the tasman sea...in geelong (australia!...)
i'm now looking at boats 20 years younger and thousands $ cheaper...in the caribbean.

Wow. Thanks for the advice. Will look at the suggestions. Shame that NZ is tired. The s & s style is more 60's than the ior pregnancy shapes of the 34 etc

Let us know what you are thinking.
I too am in the market and attempting to rationalise what i need and what i want.

It's interesting that Oz has mentioned the Adams 36 as i too have identified it as a 'boat of interest' and will do some research.

I think you are in a position to consider if you want a modern or classical interior. Do you need tankage, refrigeration, water making capability.

I don't know where you sail but I do not think i would consider a boat without a holding tank.

Just food for thought.

Tanks and refrigeration are definite must haves or be able to install.

I don't think the Adams 36 is for us. Whole lot of reasons that really wouldnt affect most people.

A black water tank would be needed at the marina but again I can throw one in if space permits

I like the Robert Perry designs a lot but need to find one that hasnt been neglected.

I am sure it will turn up i thought maybe some members might offer up there boats and avoid brokers fees???

Having a fairly firm idea of what you want is both good and bad in the searching game. Good in that you don't waste your time or the broker/owner's time looking at no-hopers, bad in that there ain't very many boats to look at at all!!

Ann and I spent over three years searching the Aussie market for a boat to replace Insatiable I. We pretty well restricted ourselves to this market and to NZ because of the exchange rate at the time (2000-2003) which kinda doubled our purchasing power here (we're Yanks). We did as you have done, and made up a list of criteria for our search -- a few things that we really wanted, and some things that were deal-breakers, and a few sure-would-be-nice items. Had quite varied responses from brokers. Some really appreciated the effort we'd gone to to save them time and used the list to winnow out the few possibles from their listings. Others barely looked at the document and showed us what they thought we should have which often turned out to be the one tied to their own docks!!

We ended up buying a one-off from her professional builder through a word of mouth referral, and she hit 20 out of 21 items on our list. We were, and still are, stoked! So, it can happen, but it is likely to be a slow process.

I don't know where you are located, but FWIW, the hardest working and most attentive broker that we encountered in all that time was Lee Condell at performance yachts in Bayview on the Pittwater. He never came up with the right boat for us, but he never gave up either, and more importantly he never wasted our time with boats that he knew were the wrong thing for us.

Sure hope that you can find your own very special boat...

Would you be interested ina a Valiant 40? These guys ( Syzygy Sailing ) sailed from San Francisco to OZ and will probably sell their boat come fall of 2011. They've done some major repairs and it will probably sell in your price range... you can read about it in their blog. They are in Brisbane right now.
