Re: Who's going to the Bahamas!?

If the current forecast hold for next week, it's not the best week to go. Wednesday is the only day that the wind isn't coming out of the North. Forecast is for 5-10 out of the South-ish. It quickly goes North again on Thurs. Here is an animation of the Gribs.

All you good folk out sailing...while here in Kingston Canada we are "enjoying" snowstorms, freezing rain, ice pellets, and generally miserable, lousy, winter weather.

What the hell am I doing here?

Thank you for NOT posting pictures.

Re: Who's going to the Bahamas!?

We will be crossing from Lake Worth inlet in a couple of weeks. If you are still in Florida and interested in crossing to the Abaco's pm me. We are a 35 ft sailboat, cruise at 6 kts. May have another sailboat with us. We have been across a couple of times. Worth waiting for a good window.

Re: Who's going to the Bahamas!?

I've been crossing for over 30 years and the best advice I can give is this:

Go to the Beach before you leave. Look east to the horizon. If you see elephants marching on the horizon line - don't go, I don't care what the weather says. The weather is wrong half the time anyway.

If the horizon is smooth - haul ass!!

I prefer crossing during day light, because of the shipping, cruise ship traffic.

Re: Who's going to the Bahamas!?

The advise that this is easy is right...and wrong. Having done it, I know it is easy with good weather. I can also recall the anxiety before setting off, which was not easy. Once completed, you realize it was not that big a deal. Another boat may help make good decisions or might not. It is not that far distance wise. We heard on the radio some sailboat who just left the Bahamas talking to SeaTow arranging getting towed back across due to engine failure. (Did not make much sense to me with that big sticking up thing and all that white cloth)
