Wanted: small sailboat for child

My ten year old has really taken to the big boat. Now he wants one he can sail himself. Something small enough to fit in the back of my truck is ideal. Anyone have a 420 or smaller? A sailing dinghy? Anything small with a sail on it? I've got a couple bucks, not a Rockefeller, and have the means to fix it up a bit if needed. Not looking for a showpiece, just something he can dub around in and build some confidence/independence. Located in New England. Thanks for considering.Click image for larger version

There must be hundreds of Sunfish out there for sale. Check Craigslist.

mariner36bob,

Maybe the two of you could build an Optimist or an El Toro or Sabot? For the right father/son combo, could be a great winter project, launch in Spring. Could probably sew up a sail for those, too.

Ann, that is completely possible. I haven't found anything available in a kit form that doesn't have (as he calls it) a" square nose". He played on an opti this summer and complained the "square nose" wasn't cool.

P.s. I've been wearing these jeans with holes in both knees for years, were you volunteering to sew a sail?

You're too kind.

I built a Bolger "Teal" with a group of 7th graders. It turned out to be a nice little sailer. It was 12 feet or so long, and the mast removes and you can use it as a dory type rowboat too. If he liked the lines, it would also be good and versatile choice.

A lot more nice people.

Expand your horizons. Look for boats that are commonly used for training by yacht clubs. These types are always being traded. On this coast it is the Sydney Sabot. Shop from within your own local pool of available boats.

I really like the idea of building a boat together. Your son will never forget the experience and neither will you.
These guys sell plans and kits for some very nice little pointy ended sail boats.

Re: Wanted: small sailboat for child

By the time you're finished building one, your son may have lost interest in sailing.

Re: Wanted: small sailboat for child

Simple boats can show large amounts of progress in a weekend . It is not the same as a large boat .A friend built 15 foot canoe type boat in one week for a Christmas present for his nephew .the boy's job was to paint it .he was thrilled .I an sure that your son would be pleased to spend the time with you.
You never love any boat as much as the one you build

Check out some of Jim Michalak's plans. Easy to build, and an incredible experience for dad and son alike. I've built over a dozen of these things now. . . . Just. Can't. Stop! . . .

Jim Michalak's Boat Plans

See especially Mixer, Mixer 2, and Slam Dink. All pointy-nosed, singlehand-able, and light enough to be chucked into the bed of a truck.
