Re: Volvo Penta 2003 Engine Parts
Hi - you got it figured out!
The parts are mainly for the 2003 series diesel engine - the 3 cylinder model.
Some of the items - bearings, injectors, push rods - will work on any of the 2000 series engines (2001, 2002, 2003).

Volvo sells a lot of different engines with variations on each model, the parts are not necessarily interchangeable, just giving the year still leaves a too wide range of possibilities. Which model specifically? For example, MD2020-A (B, C, D...).

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 Engine Parts
The parts I am selling are for the 2000 series engine - primairly the 2003 engine. Most of these parts came from a fresh water cooled 2003 engine, serial number FL 2861 - which makes it about a 1985 model year engine.
These parts are NOT for the later model MD-2020 etc engines. If you own a 2001, 2002 or 2003 engine, then you will know what I am talking about. I think the 2000 series of engine was made from 1984 to about 1996 (?)
This series of engines also had a bunch of variations, but the ones that were sold and installed in pleasure boats (mainly sailboats) have no other identifying letters after the number (except the turbocharged models, which then have a "T" - as is 2003T).
Just for general information, the engine in my boat is 2003, s/n FL 12808, and it was new in 1986 and purchased in England. It is a salt water cooled engine, NOT a fresh water cooled engine. However, the block and heads are all the same. I have used one of the fresh water heads listed (the one for $300) for the last year on my salt water engine while I got my original head re-built.
The only thing you have to do to use a fresh water head on a salt water engine is to put a small nylon restrictor plug (cost $1.00 to make) in the water tube - extremely simple.
Both of the heads and head components I have listed for sale came from FRESH water cooled engines that I bought and stripped for parts over the last couple of years.
In my opinion, the salt water cooled engines are a thousand times better than the fresh water cooled. You have far fewer parts to deal with, and you only have a couple of cooling water pipes that can leak. I tapped the inlet and outlet ports of the fresh water pump on my engine and installed screw-in hose nipples and have replaced all the copper cooling water tubes (except for 1) with rubber hoses - and have never had a leak.
If you want to convert your fresh water engine to salt water cooling, you need to change the thermostat for a 165F one and install the $1.00 restrictor plug in the water tube and your good to go. And you get to get rid of the fresh water pump, lots of tubing, etc.
I first took the head of my engine in 2010 - after 25 years of use - to check for salt build up in the head and block and to see why the engine was down on power. There was very minimual salt build up - it could have gone another 10 years. The valves were really pitted and needed re-grinding, and the fuel injectors needed full servicing. The exhaust riser had a ton of carbon/soot build up inside it that really restricted the exhaust gas outflow and that need to be cleaned out. The valves and exhaust were the reasons for the loss of power.
Hope this helps to clarify what I have for sale!

Re: Volvo Penta 2003 Engine Parts
Hi Olaf - try: www.marinepartsexpress.com
In their website they have a section called SCHEMATICS. Click it on, then Volvo Diesel Engines, then search around for what you are looking for - it is usually by major components.
Once you find the components you are after, then you have to search around and find the correct series engine you have and a schematic will come up that gives part numbers.
You can enter the part number on the same page in a window (usually) and it will give a corrected/new part number if there is one and the current price.
Usually you have to leave the dash and last digit off for the system to work, ie if it says 844321-9, you would just enter 844321.
Thier prices are cheaper than Volvo's and are usually only a dollar or two higher than other discounters. They do free shipping if you order enough stuff.
Hope this helps.
