Volvo 120S sail drive

For sale in New Orleans, Volvo S120C saildrive, 2.24:1 ratio, P/N 853958, S/N 3101057922. Have just filled it with oil and mounted it on a MD2020 engine to test it, it runs and shifts fine with no noise or leaks. There is some slight corrosion around the upper third of the exterior housing from growth, but it doesn't appear to have penetrated the factory coating. There is no prop, prop nut or anode, but unit comes with what appears to be a new clamping ring (358.00 from Volvo). Also the rubber seal is neither torn nor dryrotted, but to not replace it might fall into the false economy category. Price is 1000.00. My phone number is 985 285 2445. I also have a video of it running and shifting but couldn't figure out how to make it upload.

Re: Volvo 120S sail drive

Hi jimbunyard-

Would you happen to know if the lower leg of the S120C you have is interchangeable with the lower leg original 120S? (circa 1984, sometimes called an S120A) I have an MD11D, so the upper housing on the S120C is incompatible, as far as I can tell. I've done a ton of research on this, but I'm still scratching my head.

Thanks!

Re: Volvo 120S sail drive

I'll try to get some identifying numbers on Monday. They're a little obfuscated with 30 years of crud on 'em, makes them hard to read. :-/

Cheers-

Re: Volvo 120S sail drive

Have looked into it, and as usual learn only to ask more questions, mostly anyway.

Based on you having an MD11D, the S120C lower unit will not fit, they have a different bolt pattern. What is a little odd is that the internal parts, from the coupling down, appear to be the same, so if you have internal issues then there could be something of interest here.

Can you tell me more of what your problem is? I think there are probably other options.

Not aware if you know of it but the web site 'Marine Parts Express' has a comprehensive online parts catalog with exploded views of the engines and drives in question. Go to their website, click on 'Schematics' in the middle of the home page, scroll down to 'Volvo Penta Marine', click on that, at the index click on 'diesel' and then click on your engine model. The saildrive and transmissions are listed in the engine directory.

Best regards
