Technautics Cool Blue refrigerations

I have a Technautics Cool Blue as described on Technautics CoolBlue Marine Refrigeration. I purchased the unit in late 2007 and installed in early 2008. Recently during the replacement of my fresh water tanks, it was necessary to tear out much of the galley which gave me an opportunity to rework ice box. This unit was running when de-installed. Missing is the thermostat ($50 item from rparts) and the mounting brackets for the cold plate (starboard which would be easy to make). According to the web site unit retails for $2,950. Asking $900 plus shipping. Pictures on request.

What are the dimensions of the holding plate? Which one is it on the holding plate page of the website? gts1544

Re: Technautics Cool Blue refrigerations

I have several questions as follows:
Why is the holding plate 2.5 inches thick when the one Technautics advertises is only 1 inch thick? Is it the one that came with the unit or another?
Does it still have the 12 feet of copper tubing? and is it still charged? How long has it been "de-installed"? Why are you not keeping this same unit to use with your new reworked ice box? I am looking at replacing an older Technautics unit but must be careful with possible replacement with another used unit with no waranty or guarantee that it will work once installed and charged up again. What can you tell me about your satisfaction with this older Cool Blue--possibly not to good since you are replacing it??? Thanks for your frankness and honesty in answering these questions and concerns. Wally Alexander

Re: Technautics Cool Blue refrigerations

The holding plate was original and the one shipped when I purchased . I believe that they sell a 1 inch and 2.5 inch. I'm assuming the 2.5 is for larger capacity boxes. This is the one they recommended for my boat. I have not stretched out the copper pipe but it looks to be 12 feet (all is still coiled as I only need a couple of feet). As to if it is still charged, I assume it is. The connections are the type that seal when not connected and disconnected. The reason I replaced was that the admiral wanted a separate refrigerator and freezer. Our old box was quite large with little or no insulation. We got into a project of replacing the water tanks which were under the sole and part of the galley cabinets. To replace we had to tear out part of the cabinets and decided to tackle improving the ice box, in fact, we have redone the whole galley (new stove, refrig, countertops, reworked storage, and refrigerator/freezer). We considered building a new refrigerator and freezer box but decided to buy prebuilt units. Because we now have to compressors, we decided to go with keel cooled units to gain efficiency.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Technautics Cool Blue refrigerations

Thanks for the info---we would be willing to take a chance on this unit that it will work once we pay for installation of the electrical hook ups. We would offer $550. What say you? Thanks again...Wally Aelxander

The 1" plate is standard, the 2.5" is optional:

I have a Cool Blue on my boat with the 2.5" plate.
Going on 11 years and 11,000 hours on the system. (Got a digital hour-meter on the compressor)

Great product and I love it..No mainteneance and reliabile as a hammer.
The only snag I had was the size of the wireing, the manual said 14 gauge and I got too much of a voltage drop so it would cut out due to the sensitive controller.
Re-wired it and went from 1.0 volt prop to .5 volt and no more problems.
Go with a 10 gauge wire, or 8 if you want max efficency..

The Cool Blue is worth every penny and then some.

Guys.... You may wish to take your negotiations to PM. Not that you are violating any rule of CF, but general internet forum etiquette.

BTW, $900 is a very fair price for that unit! Wish I had the extra cash!

Re: Technautics Cool Blue refrigerations

Thanks fpr your input Captain Geo but this unit is available at $2500 brand new with a 5 year warranty and free shipping from any of the boat shows. This one is about 6 years old with no guarantees and the current price is over 40% of that when you look at the shipping costs. I can sell you some Lewmar 48 2 speed winches for about 40% of new price if you think thats a good deal! $800 each vs $2100 new. Do you want them? I thought not!! Thanks for your input but everyone has their own ideas of what a "very fair price" is. I have asked what the sellers bottom price is and they have not responded. I am simply weighing my risks with the possible reward. If the unit doesn't work I have absolutely no recourse and my money is gone! Unless.....Capt Geo wants to guarantee the unit?? What say you?
