Small prop for sailboat inboard

I need a 12" x 8"P right-handed prop (1" shaft) for my Cape Dory 28 and I can't seem to find one anywhere, save a new one for nearly $600. That's half what I paid for my engine! Does anyone happen to have one, or (more likely) know a used part place that has a good selection of props? Or I've called a couple dozen places but it's such an odd, small size that I haven't turned up any leads...

That IS a tiny wheel. What have you got , an 8 hp?
Is this a replacement prop, or what the numbers call for ?

I'd call Millers Island Prop in Maryland, or Kastel Brothers in St Michaels maryland, or Bacon Sails in Annapolis Maryland.

They all have quite a supply of used props, and since there are a lot of small boats in the area, likely they'll have something that will fit or can be repitched...

I have a two blade that fits that description or is close, 150 usd plus shipping. I'll check when I get home and let you know.

I may have this prop...it is new and unused. I will check it out. You can have it for pretty cheap. Does your shaft have a keyway? Bob

Mine is a 13 x 9, close, if you're interested.

Re: Small prop for sailboat inboard

Wow, thanks. I was about ready to give up hope so this is very heartening! PM's sent.

It is a very small engine (7hp) on a small (but heavy) boat, a Cape Dory 28 weighing in at 9-10,000lbs. I got the boat without engine or prop so I'm starting blind here but 12 x 8 is what I was told by a couple prop guys. I'm not likely to do a lot of motor-sailing so the prop isn't a great concern to me. It will be nice to have in tight spots but I am a bit concerned that being so underpowered will mean the engine isn't doing much in heavy seas where I might need it most. Can anyone familiar with two-vs-three blade props give me a sense of how these numbers would change for a two blade, or is it more complicated than a simple conversion? As I understand it you just need a bit more surface area on each blade to make up roughly the same area for the entire prop?

Minney's Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa, Ca has hundreds of props and they ship worldwide.

Re: Small prop for sailboat inboard

First off, are you SURE it's right-hand? My cd28 w/ Volvo md2b takes a left hand prop.

Second, I bought a brand new Campbell sailor a year and change ago, cost around $350 straight from the manufacturer.

I would recommend this particular prop highly for your boat - mine easily does hull speed and backs down nicely

If you are willing to go plastic you can get one for about $250.

My understanding is that in exchange for some durability you get a prop that is better for fuel economy. At high loads/rpms it flattens out slightly delivering full power and at lower load/rpm it ramps up giving better fuel economy.

The wee motor will probably do nothing for you in heavy seas or against strong winds.
4, or 5 in a calm, or helping to point a little higher in semi nasty conditions.
