Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
This Simpson-Lawrence/Lewmar manual windlass came included with (but was not installed) on my Albin Vega. It is a very lightweight solution for bringing in anchor chain. I believe it is a 5/8" chain gypsy.
Includes what is seen in the photos. Ratchets smoothly, looks good. Very simple and reliable design - uses a standard winch handle to operate.
Price: $250

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
5/8" chain gypsy seem kind of big for a manual windlass. Now if this actually fit 5/16" chain then I would be very much interested in checking this out.
Please PM me if fits 5/16" chain.

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
You are correct, it's not 5/8". Upon re-inspection I noticed a marking which indicates this is a 1/2" gypsy.

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
Might want to take the windlass down to your local chandlery and see what chain actually fits. 1/2" chain would be way larger than this windlass could be expected to handle. These winches were designed for use on smaller boats and 1/2" chain would be what you'd expect on a 50' plus boat.

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
Thanks for the tip, unless the marking on the gypsy is incorrect, this is for 1/2". If it helps to bring anymore sense to it, the boat was being outfitted to tank-like specifications.

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
combo rope/chain gypsy, might be 1/2" rope... 1/2 chain is more like 80 feet than 50

Here is a link to the manual that I believe should cover your windlass.
http://slspares.co.uk/pdf/Website%20...n%20Manual.pdf
Do you see anything on your gypsy like "RC152", "RC162", or "RC172"? That should tell us what your Gypsy is designed to handle.

Where are you? If close by we can check it out with my chain. We are travelling down through Florida.

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
You mean horizontal? What is in the picture is a light weight model for small boats. Very little leverage, unlike the vertical windlass where you have a long bar to provide a mechanical advantage for heavier anchors. Its worth about $25 at a used marine supply house, or even less at most boat flea markets. No way at $250. For that price, you can get the real deal.

Might be correct, I hadn't considered that

Thanks for the offer, I'm on the left coast - Los Angeles, CA. If I'm unable to reach a conclusion based on markings I will take it into a chandlery as previously suggested and figure it out that way.

Your input is appreciated, though you may want to check your info. Everything I have read indicates this is a vertical windlass. My price is based on what I saw comparable units sell for on ebay.

Re: Simpson-Lawrence Manual Vertical Windlass
If you look carefully at your photos, looks like 172 on the bottom of the gypsy.

Good eye - that was the marking that I believe says 1/2". It's possible it is meant to be a 172 stamp, but if so the top of the '7' is definitely incomplete. At any rate, there are two line/chain combo gypsies, and of the two it's RC172 that is compatible with 1/2" line. So either the stamp is meant to say 172 or 1/2", but either way it'd indicate the same gypsy.
Long story short: all evidence indicates this gypsy is designed for 5/16" BBB chain, 1/2" line.
