Re: Sailboat ballast needed

I'm presuming you have explored the usual preferred marine routes, and are looking for alternatives?
For steel, or maybe its Iron, try fabricators of driveway drainages grills, made of the flat bar with welded cross pieces.
I needed 1100lbs to balance a commercial glass tilt-table, and got it for free, just for cleaning up the fab yard.

BTW, welcome aboard THE best forum

Re: Sailboat ballast needed

If you live in a northern climat where people change tires for the winter, you will find lead at the tire retailers for free. My first boat required 8000 lbs and my wife gathered them all that way, one bucket at a time. This is the trick, you send the lady and those guys will give her all the lead they have and even carry it to the back of the car, when I went, they never had any...

Re: Sailboat ballast needed

How would you like it shipped?

Sorry, couldn’t help.
I got my lead from the junk yards (several). Lead prices vary with the market, so keep updated to grab a good deal. Also, if you do choose lead (recommended) start planning on how you will melt it, cause it comes in all shapes and sizes, but the process albeit toxic (use proper breathing equipment) is quite simple.

Don't know where you need your lead, but old batterys have a lot of it, and can be found cheap or free, put an add on criegs list for it, also, old possibly free sailboats sitting around may have what you need if you are willing to go after it. Plummers also remove a lot of old lead pipes, I have found a few that love to give it away.

A resourceful man/woman that has a cause (floating a sailboat)can gain a lot of respect from those that also work for a living. Simply asking to hall off a pile of lead pipe, or batterys, that didn't cost the plumber or the mechanic anything will go a long ways. I have always been resourceful, and simply asking doesn't cost anything and can be fruitful.

Re: Sailboat ballast needed

If you go the battery route , you'll only need about 200 of them. Then you'll need to dispose of the casings (haz-mat) , then you'll have to melt them in a smelting device which has a particulate stack to capture the gases and filter them ($$$$). Then you'll have to dispose of the acids ($$$) and have all this transported by a licensed Haz- Mat carrier. This idea had to be a joke!!! Junk batteries are sold and not given away by mechanics. They have to keep a record of them and where they are disposed of. The person who collects them has to be a licensed vender.
I don't think even a metal recycler can sell lead to an individual.
