Para Anchor

After reading the excellent storm tactics and reviewing the drag device database I am on the hunt for a parachute/para Anchor for our Lavezzi 40.

Before I stump up for a new one, thought I would check if anyone has one surplus to requirements, sold boat or something.

We are located queensland coast.

Thanks
David

Re: Para Anchor

G'day Dave
We have a 50 ft Cat say 12 ton loaded and we have a 18 f anchor so you need to be a few feet smaller if you're looking for secondhand I think ours was around US$1000 new ,don't know if this helps

Re: Para Anchor

Read the same book. Came to the same conclusion. Bought one on eBay.

They regularly come up for sale on eBay for less than half the new price.
If you're not in a hurry, I'd just set up some auto search parameters and you'll be notified when one shows up for sale.

Re: Para Anchor

Mine is 18 feet and for a 40 ft mono. So bigger is better. And mine was close to $2,000.
Haven't used it yet and don't ever want to!

I don't know which storm tactics have you read but I strongly suggest you read some others, para anchors are not for cats IMO. Unless you strenghten significantly yr cleats on any FP cat, don't even think of it.
Consider drags and run bare pole in case you have to deal with a gale force wind.
I couldn't find it but there has been a long debate on this matter an the multihulls section of this forum.

Cheers

Re: Para Anchor

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

L&N I will check out the one you pointed me to. I see it is a Southern 24 - 18

Just concerned about the size may be too big. I saw a couple of reports in the drag database about bigger may not be better. We are 12m so a Tasman 15 looks like the correct size.

Regards

David
