Re: Monitor Windvane

A good question would be; What year/model is it? http://www.selfsteer.com/used/index.php

Re: Monitor Windvane

i didn't know they made different models. i thought only the mounting 'bracket' is customized.
i don't see any major changes tbh. looks like scanmar wants you to buy a new one.
i've got the original receipt for it somewhere, the manual also.
i'll get the info together if someone is interested.

Re: Monitor Windvane

Somewhere along the line the switched from 304 Stainless to 316, which is what they use now. There are serial #s on all Monitors, so it would be easy to tell the details with that by calling Scanmar.

Posting the serial number is very helpful. Selfsteer can tell you the age and history of all but the oldest models.

Re: Monitor Windvane

Whoever buys this unit, - - just be sure to drill and put a BOLT thru the cheeks just below the paddle hinge. The older models relied on the weld which WILL fail, the newer models have been modified and are bolted.

They have to be bolted to support the (sacrificial) Safety Tube.

Re: Monitor Windvane

I have used a Monitor Windvane for years. It steers better than any autopilot, and I have used numerous of these as well. The boat must be well trimmed, but at least the wind vane sails a straight course as long as the wind is steady. I use a Monitor on my personal boat.
It is basically correct that the mounting bracket must be custom for your particular boat. The depth also matters. Scanmar would of course love to sell you a new monitor, but they are also very helpful in assisting you with a used one. After all, they will likely need to custom build the mounting bracket for your particular yacht. It is worth it. They are experts at putting that blade precisely where it needs to be.

Re: Monitor Windvane

The older models did not have the bolt that shows in your pic. There was a split clamp arrangement to hold the safety tube and the side cheeks were not through bolted. I found the Monitor worked well as long as all the parts were in good condition, it is built a little light for my liking and once there is a bit of wear here and there it becomes dodgy. IMO, the Aries is a lot more robust and forgiving of old age.

Re: Monitor Windvane

SP Carrol a monitor is probably a bit too heavy for your boat, you might look into a cap horn (i have one on my 27 footer, it's lighter).
Alecadi, i haven't decided on a price. i will take some photos in a few days, i'm in the midst of a project right now and haven't the time. yes, it is complete and has 'extras' mentioned.
thanks both of you for your interest. i'll get the info organized and pm you.
no offense but this is a classified ad, not a thread to debate, critique or laud the monitor windvane. chatters feel free to start a thread of your own.
thanks.

Re: Monitor Windvane

A fellow cruiser in my Annapolis anchorage is awaiting the purchase of a used windvane to take his newly acquired Tayana 37 home to Hobart down under. He has a limited cruising budget but plenty of sailing experience, and is ready to buy.

Kindly contact me ASAP, I am sailingwmn at gmail, to get the two of you in touch, probably by phone as he has limited access to internet. I am trying to give him a hand to get him outta here before winter sets in.

Tks Capt Lou
