This is a good program for a good organization. We bought one there about 13 years ago. You will want to examine any boat very carefully as many have fallen into disuse before they end up here, but I still go each year and there are plenty of good boats to see.

Thanks for the info. I'm bookmarking the site for future reference. Some of the boats appear to be in decent condition.

The Wx looks like it will be decent so I will likely take a swing by since I live 15 minutes from there...

Re: Massachusetts Maritime Academy Auction

Southbounder-

Went to the MMA sealed bid sale today. You can see the full list of boats on their site, so I'll just comment on the ones that caught my eye. Overall, there seemed to be slightly fewer boats that I recall in the past, but the average quality seemed to be higher. MMA had winterized and cleaned and painted the bottoms on many of them.

Several nice pocket cruisers if you want to grab one and go:

There were three boats that looked like they had:
1) most of their equipment intact (just a general guess after a quick look)
2) not too neglected, but would need some work clean up, troubleshoot interior systems and to get ready to cruise; the right stuff to cruise and were fairly well equipped
3) Generally a decent cruising design

Columbia 42 - Red topsides that were fresh looking and not faded as red usually gets- Had a clean looking Westerbeke, pouch fill of manuals on the saloon table, decent finish on the wood (most of the donated boats in the past have varnish that is several years old and needs complete redoing), OK upholstery inside and sails in bags. Nice three blade feathering prop. Full keel w/ separate spade rudder, but a heavy duty one. Large forward head and v berth.

Cape Dory 27, new bottom paint, Yanmar that was a little rusty from companionway drip, venerable Monitor windvane (I think it was S/N 009!!!). Full keel with attached rudder and fixed three blade prop. Only a porta-potty, but room (barely) to plumb a real head. Tiller steering. I have always liked Cape Dorys a lot and with a little labor this would be a very nice one if the engine is ok.

Pearson 30 More or less full keel with separate beefy full skeg hung rudder and three blade feathering prop. Tiller steering, Clean inside with clean looking diesel. Had a small kero heater on the bulk head and was generally set up for cruising.

For the power crowd they had a couple of nice Shamrock CC w/inboard gas.

I believe that tomorrow, Sunday the 20th, is the last day of the auction.

Re: Massachusetts Maritime Academy Auction

SVTwilight,

Thanks for the overview. I thought your more quality, less quantity comment was interesting.

Maybe they have become more selective with their donations.
