Loran C Anybody collect old gear?

I have an old Loran C receiver that I'd like to find a new home for. Is it worth anything as a collectors item?

Re: Loran C Anybody collect old gear?

First you would need to find out if ANYPLACE in the world still has not dismantled their systems. Not just turned it off, but actually dismantled the equipment, so that it is never going to be there to turn it back on.

AFAIK a casual web search shows no active systems, with current DATES to go along with them. Rumors of India and Saudi Arabia...but nothing substantive or currently dated.

And there's typically an internal memory backup battery, if the unit is ten years old, that's in need of replacement as well. Give it to a museum?

That's kind of what I was thinking. Any "antique" collectors out there?

Re: Loran C Anybody collect old gear?

amytom,

Since you already know it has no usable value I won't even go there.
A museum as someone has already suggested. Mystic Seaport, Ct. may enjoy having it as a display.

It isn't worth a plug nickel. Just do what the rest of us have done and pitch it.

Re: Loran C Anybody collect old gear?

Loran is in operation in UK I believe and a few other places. It will come back in several countries over next few years. They will add something to it and call it eLoran. I believe the new version will be backward compatible with the old one.

But realistically there is no point in cruisers having Loran as a navigation tool. Plain old Loran is not very precise.

My understanding is that it will not be.

I have one also. I suspect the museums are already full of them. They are like laptop computers - I suspect the best thing for is recycling. 1

Re: Loran C Anybody collect old gear?

I guess the overall opinion is it is junk. Someplace I have one with a sunken boat stored in it. Without signals the unit is a deep six item. GPS will probably go the same route,

Anyone have an old R-390/R-392, etc? Please do NOT throw it out! Someone will be past shortly to pick it up.

Make friends with the bartender or owner of a waterfront dive bar. Donate to their decorations, might get a few drinks....
