Thumbs up Inmarsat broadband (BGAN) terminal

I have a BGAN terminal for sale:
Nera Worldpro 1010, very compact.
230/110v and 12v power.
10m cable (you can separate the antenna to mount ourdoor and keep "the brains" indoors.
USB or LAN connection to PC.
More details here.
$600, Paypal.

Why better than Isat Phone or Iridium?
Because the download speed is 20x quicker, and you are charged per MB of data, not per minute of slow connection.

Do you know what's Inmarsat BGAN?

Is it expensive? No.
$8 per MB, no monthly fees and SIM card valid for 2 years.
$1 per min calls, $0.50 per sms.
Very fair prepaid plan: pay when you use it, for data used... Here is a prepaid SIM with 5MB of data or 50min calls. Valid 730 days, no monthly, no activation, no hidden charges.

Ideal to download weather forecasts, emails, message on Skype, Whatsapp on offshore passages, deliveries, can call/sms too.

Does it work on a boat? Yes, check here and here.

Do you have more questions? Send me a PM.

Re: Inmarsat broadband (BGAN) terminal

I had some comments that BGAN does not work (blocked) on the water and they have to buy a FleetBroadband.

Below is several links to confirm the opposite:

Panbo: "Godfrey, In Miami an Inmarsat representative assured me that it does not cut off BGAN users just because they're to use the system offshore." - it is one call away from you to check out.
One
Two: this is the comment of the major seller: (find Can I use BGAN service on a boat or vessel? below)
Three: here is a real test by a CF member
Four: these guys use BGAN to do their blog

Of course, you can always buy a FleetBroadband ($10-15k hardware) and pay a monthly fee to have it connected

Hi SVI, it's not that I disappeared- as I mentioned in the PM, I'm just not prepared to risk it being shut off by the Inmarsat folks once I bring it out on the water. You're probably right, a non-issue, but I'm not prepared to risk it.

Four Coconuts, I reitirate - the risk does not exist. But to get you covered - I will refund you the complete purchase amount if your BGAN is switched off by Inmarsat on the water offshore (provided you have enough units on your account). Because I know they will not.

Re: Inmarsat broadband (BGAN) terminal

Actually, I have one more BGAN terminal for sale (a colleague of mine asked to sell):

It is Thrane & Thrane Explorer 300, a better one - it has a small screen to show the signal level, GPS/Bluetooth status etc, alarm (error) messages and even SMS!
Three interfaces: Phone (normal corded phone), LAN and Bluetooth.
Plus a small compass (to point to the satellite) and angle indicator.

Perfect condition, tested to work, if necessary can add a prepaid BGAN SIM card (+$25).

Unfortunately, does not have the battery (died, new battery is $100 on Ebay), but works perfectly from any 12v source (cable included).

$750 + shipping. New one is at least $2,000.

Re: Inmarsat broadband (BGAN) terminal

Nobody needs weather en-route offshore? Remember - you are charged per MB of data, not per minute like on Isat phone or Iridium, with no monthly fee!
And can be used to call and receive calls - just add a regular wired home phone set (RJ45 telephone jack)
