For Sale: 1978 Cal 2-29

Circumstances force us to sell Sofia Terese, currently located in Bradenton, FL. Here are the particulars:
  • All new wiring throughout in 2008
  • Two West Marine Sea Volt deep-cycle batteries (105 AH each) and separate charging battery, all added August 2009
  • Guest 10 amp A/C battery charger
  • Freshly Awl-gripped in 2008
  • Fresh bottom paint in August 2009
  • New anchor platform added November 2009
  • Two 13# Danforths and one 22# Delta with oversized chain and rode
  • 110% genoa and jiffy reefing mainsail in excellent condition (genoa purchased in September 2009), 50% storm jib in good condition
  • All standing rigging new in 2008
  • All running rigging in excellent condition
  • Barient #28 sheet winches and Barient #10 halyard winches
  • Roller furling (brand unknown)
  • All required safety gear (4 PFDs, fire extinguishers tagged through October 2010, etc...)
  • (2) automatic bilge pumps (and one spare) and (1) manual bilge pump
  • 8' Porta-Bote dinghy (just oars, no outboard), new in 2007
  • Garelick SS telescoping boarding ladder
  • Working Raritan manual head (can be converted to electric)
  • 50# icebox
  • Dorm-sized Black and Decker refrigerator
  • Ritchie Navigator binnacle compass, new in August 2009
  • Uniden VHF w/ DSC
  • Handheld Garmin GPS12
  • Kuuma propane grill
  • Spare impellers, zincs, gaskets, etc...
The engine was installed in October 2009. It is a Universal 5411 that was factory-converted to fresh water cooling with two heat exchangers, so it's never seen salt water. It was professionally rebuilt and has only 63 post-rebuild miles. It has an 85 amp alternator with a Heart Interface regulator. It has a very tiny drip from the oil sending unit that I mention just in the interest of full disclosure (it probably just needs to be tightened).

Now for what it needs:
  • All the sanitation thru-hulls were replaced with bronze ones in August 2009; however, the stem on the 1-1/2" discharge valve snapped off about a month ago so it will need to be replaced.
  • It needs a stove; we've been using our Coleman but we'll need to take that with us.
  • The faucets are both manual; the one in the galley works but is tired and the one in the head is (I think) frozen.
  • The interior cushions will need to be replaced or at least recovered. There are no exterior cushions and no cushion in the starboard quarterberth.
  • The aft bilge pump works but won't shut off automatically.
  • We think it needs a new battery isolator.
  • We have no recent survey.
The boat is registered in Arizona through July 2010, but Arizona does not issue titles on boats. What you will get is a notarized Bill of Sale.

That's all my tired brain can think of right now. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. Here is a link to pictures; I will be adding more pictures to this link in the next day or two (I haven't taken the interior shots yet):

Collection: 1978 Cal 2-29

She's a basic boat but a solid one, and will make someone a lovely coastal cruiser or liveaboard. We are asking $8,500 or best offer, so feel free to throw out a reasonable figure if you're interested. Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Speedoo - it was a difficult but necessary decision.

I should also mention the specs, which I neglected to list:

LOA: 29' LWL: 24' Beam: 9'3" Draft: 4'6"
24 gallon water tank
20 gallon fuel tank

Also, there's a depth sounder.

Wow... That was fast.

If you must sell the yacht I suggest you place an ad in Southwinds (see SOUTHWINDS Magazine | News and Views for Southern Sailors ). The ad's are very inexpensive but get good coverage.

Good Luck...

s/v HyLyte

Hi, HyLyte -

Yes, far too fast. Thanks for the heads up on Southwinds; I'll definitely check it out.

Hopefully you are both physically okay.

You might also post a notice at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron on Longboat (see Sarasota Sailing Squadron | Home ). There are a lot of small boat sailors there and your Cal would be ideal for some.

FWIW...

HyLyte, thanks so much for all your help. Yes, we are both okay, just unable to find work here to maintain the boat in the manner to which she's entitled. We refuse to become derelict liveaboards so we're just going to have to pick it up again at some future point. Andy has his old job waiting for him in Phoenix if we can just get there.

Anjou, thank you - we tried to do right by the boat and keep her beautiful. If the economy weren't so bad, believe me we'd hold out for a lot more!
