Fixed mount GPS *without* DSC

I'm looking for a newish fixed mount VHF radio that doesn't have DSC, or will work without a GPS attached without sounding the "position lost" alarm every 4 hours. If you don't understand what I'm referring to please take a look at my recent poston the subject in the marine electronics forum.

This would be a good opportunity for anyone thinking of upgrading to a DSC and/or AIS equipped radio.

There are a few of these on ebay right now in the $50 and under range, but I thought I'd see if any forum members had one first.

Re: Fixed mount GPS *without* DSC

I have an Apelco 8500. Not exactly "newish", but excellent condition. The only catch is that the mount is on the boat under shrinkwrap, and I'm not sure when I'll be able to visit to take it off (it's a 2 hour drive!) If you're interested, make me an offer.

You can buy any VHF DSC or not just don't connect a gps source.. Normally doesn't affect VHF use

Not true. Any VHF that meets the class D DSC standard (which includes every new fixed mount vhf sold in the US since 2013) is required to sound an audible "position lost" alarm if it hasn't received a gps position signal in 4 hours.

If you've got a VHF with DSC that you know *doesn't* do this then please tell me the model so I can go out and buy one. I've talked to tech support at both standard horizon and humminbird and they both confirmed confirmed that all their VHFs implement this alarm "feature" and have no way to turn it off.

Re: Fixed mount GPS *without* DSC

I have two , now sadly no longer produced Standard Horizon radios, both of which let me disable DSC. Very useful

all their new ones however ring stupid alarms

Do you know what the model name/number is for the ones you've got? I'd like to look for them on ebay.

I have one I'm planning to replace soon, I'd be willing to sell it. Works great, but I'm upgrading and won't need this one any more.

Re: Fixed mount GPS *without* DSC

I was told that there is a way to disable that stupid, annoying alarm by supplying +5 vdc to one conductor in the hook up harness. But he didn't tell me exactly where to put it.
