Explorer Charts for the Bahamas

I know its a little early for people to be coming back from the Bahamas, but was wondering if anyone has Explorer charts they would like to sell? We will finally have our boat back in the water in a week and will be off to the Bahamas and warm weather. I was planning on using just the CM93 charts and Raymarine chartplotter with Navionics, but after the recent thread with the cat hitting a reef, I think a set of Explorer charts are a great idea.

We are in St Augustine FL as of right now.

Thanks,

Matt

Buy a used iPad 2, 3 or 4 and load the free Garmin BlueChart Mobile

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=114005

Once you have the Garmin app then for you can download the US Coastal v2012.5 which gives you all the US and Bahamas Explorer Charts for around $30

No iPad 1? Any reason for that?

What about the C-map charts with Jeppesen Marine's app? I already have a android tablet and could use their maps.

Re: Explorer Charts for the Bahamas

i know they may be a bit expensive, but they are indispensible. if you're just going to the abacos you can buy steve dodges guide to the abacos for $30 at the west marine on u.s. 1. once there you might be able to buy an explorer chart from one of the other sailors headed back. imho, buy paper charts first, electronic charts second...

The iPad 1 cannot be updated to iOS 6, but the Garmin BlueChart app requires iOS 6. I'm biting the bullet and updating my iPad 3 to the new OS so I can play with this app.

Re: Explorer Charts for the Bahamas

When you buy the Explorer chartkits, you are not just buying the mapping, you are buying piloting directions, updated marina, customs and other local info (including phone numbers and very specific local knowledge). If you haven't looked through them, there is a ton of text in each of the 3 bahamas chartkits. Nothing wrong with trying to find a recent edition used (and nothing against the electronic charting on Garmin) but don't think that electronic "explorer charts" are a true replacement for the Explorer Chartkits. Have a great trip!

We had a pretty bad time coming into St Augustine and now are properly paranoid about not having the correct info available. The only reason we didn't want to spend the money for new is that we are only planning on being in the Bahamas for 2-3 weeks on our way further south. I just really don't want a repeat of our last entrance and was looking for a lower cost solution, but may just buy new anyway.

If you rely on Navionics you are making a mistake. Check my post on the thread re the loss of the Lagoon.

Good point. What the Garmin BlueChart Mobile does have is the Active Captain built in, so you get the marina info and the local knowledge within the chart plotter

Re: Explorer Charts for the Bahamas

Check all of the "used" sources like Ebay and Craigs. But newer is probably better. The explorer chartbooks contain a wealth of information that you will find useful. They are a useful size and very easy to follow. I wish there were similar chartbooks for further south! Before you leave, get all of the Active Captain info that you can, print it and take it along.

Local info is really needed in the Bahamas. Our Navionics charts put us on land several times. Just the way it is with charting accuracy.

I bought the Wavey Line charts for iNavx- the navionics product and was not thrilled. Although I have not gotten to these places, the charts lack the detail of a NOAA chart. For example this is the best chart of castaway cay...
