Eastern Carribean Paper Maps wanted

We will be leaving from the US in the fall and will be looking at purchasing maps for the Bahamas / Puerto-Rico / Eastern Carribean with a goal of getting to Trinidad June of 2013... If between now and November you are coming back from Cruising and wish to sell maps... Let me know.

Re: Eastern Carribean Paper Maps wanted

Any reason you want the physical maps? I cruised the easter caribbean for 2 years. The cruising guides offered better info/route planning. Gentlemans Guide to Passages South and the Doyle guides for the Leewards and Windwards were awesome! Most of the gps chartplotters are shipping with complete coverage maps. My navionics charts were more often wrong than the Garmins. They would have put my on reefs in Luperon, Anegada. Curacou, San Blas and a few other places. Garmin was much better. Personally, I think the guides would be money better spent than the charts. Just some unsolicited advice. Hope you don't mind.

I second jhovan.

We used our CMap NT+ chartplotter Caribbean charts and three guides--Scott for the Virgin Islands and Doyle for the Leewards and Windwards. The guidebook sketch charts were more accurate than the electronic charts in many areas, plus they have good sailing directions. You could easily get by with just the guidebooks. No need for bulky and expensive paper charts in the Lesser Antilles.

Re: Eastern Carribean Paper Maps wanted

Thank you for the advice!!! I truly appreciate. I already have a Raymarine c-120W with loaded maps for the US and want to get the most recent ones for the Carribean and South Ametica... We also have Rosepoint Mapping running on our MacBook Pro with GPS as a redundant system... I will look into the Guides for sure.

We are looking at what will be best to stay safe. We have an old Garmin 76 handheld also for position only. So there is plenty of redundancy on the electronic side...

We will continue the search and seriously look at the guides once again.

Haaving charts is a good thing for sure. You dont necessarily need them all. As stated, once you are near yur destination, often the guides are more handy. Good to keep your eye on the chart though....

ab2,

You definitely want to buy the Explorer paper charts for the Bahamas. None better! And a lot of good info in the notes. They also have a website with updates and fuel prices, etc.

Absolutely agree 100% with HUD. Those are the only charts I purchased. Too many reefs and shallow areas not to have these.

However, you won't find too many reefs like in the San Blas in the Windwards/Leewards. Bahamas yes yes yes! Buy those charts. They are the only way to get you through there safely.
