Classic William Tripp Fiberglass Sailboat Hull / Project $1000

This project boat is a William Tripp designed 38’ Javelin. It was built in Holland in 1961 with a solid fiberglass hull and a cored fiberglass deck. It is a full keel sloop that was originally designed as a minimum CCA off-shore racer for the Newport – Bermuda race.

Currently, the hull is completely stripped. The lead ballast keel has been separated, inspected and reattached. Original bronze hardware has been stored for reinstallation. The original mahogany interior has been retained to either reinstall or use as patterns for a new interior.

I am letting go of this project as my financial and health picture has changed from my earlier plans. I would really like to see someone finish this worthy project and my price of $1000 only reflects a desire to see a commitment toward completion, rather than scrap and salvage.

Professional Boatbuilder has an article by Ted Jones, that says "Katingo" was Tripp's first successful design. I'm impressed that you had the opportunity to own her. Ted Jones says that he thinks the Javelin may have been Tripp's best design. William Tripp, Jr. was a really great designer and his life was cut short by a car accident in 1971. His son lives on (a very successful naval architect) and is sometimes confused with his father. Thanks for your comments on Jet Stream. I hope someone will see her beauty and take on the project to see her back to glory.

I'm impressed that you had the opportunity to own her

Yeah I bought the boat around June 1985 and lived on her in the Caribe for 3.5 years. Good times and good memories..She was fast: I saw 10.5 knots, previous owner swore he saw 12 knots.

Did you find a new home for the boat? I have a Tripp-Lentch 30. I was wondering what you found when you removed the lead balast. Any info would be great.

She has a new home. The new owner is very capable and will make sure she soon graces the seas with her lovely form.

The lead ballast on the Tripp-Lentsch 30 could be different than the Javelin because the Javelin was built by C. VanLent & Zonen, in Kaag. On the Javelin, I found the ballast to be well fastened and the fasteners (stainless steel) to be totally without corrosion. I rebedded the ballast with modern sealant and reglassed the internal nuts after installation.

CSY Man- Do you know the whereabouts of "Katingo" these days?
