Re: Barient Ratcheting Winch Handle

Andy,

Your handle does not appear as though it will fit or perhaps I am not understanding my winches well enough if someone else might comment or help here? My #26 Barient is an electric winch (I have twins). The attached photo (if I have uploaded correctly - not a very good one I'm afraid) shows an insert in the center of the pocket - so a "solid" male end will not go in. Not sure if the "insert" is part of the drive shaft from the electric drive below or simply a "type" of Barient drive that is older (this is a 1975 Gulfstar M53 Ketch). I am open for any comments, opinions or suggestions on where I might find something to fit here?

Thanks in advance

Re: Barient Ratcheting Winch Handle

That "insert" is a safety device that disconnects the winch from the motor if a winch handle is fitted. If you push down on it with a screwdriver, you will see that it is a rod that moves out of the way for a handle to insert. If it doesn't move, then it is a bit stuck (common) - just whack it gently with a hammer and it will unstick and operate normally.

So you can insert normal handles as usual - the handle will work.

Mark - Thanks - Learning something new every day - appreciate the knowledge.

Andy - I will check the "detent" that mark described and get back with you on the handle in the next day or so.

Re: Barient Ratcheting Winch Handle

Mark was right on the money! - the detents work - appreciate the education - this one baffled me - never would have thought of checking? And...the standard winch handle fits just fine.

Andy - appologies - won't be needing that Barient handle - but it sure was a good looking piece of kit and a bit of history as they don't make these winches anymore. Fortunately, my #26's are in beautiful shape and I have the lube/spring/pawl kits for the service interval - good thing I can still get those on the parts shelf.

On to my next task of the 16KW Kubota genny head gasket...looks like I now have oil in my coolant...uuugh!
