Auto-helm Self steering gear

Auto-helm wind vane self steering gear. View more details at http://www.selfsteer.com/products/autohelm/index.php. This unit uses a wind vane to drive a trim tab, making this system completely independent of your steering system. It is especially well suited for center cockpit boats and can be used as an emergency rudder.

This gear came off of a 30,000#, 44 foot cruising sail boat and did a beautiful job of steering me down the Washington and Oregon coast in 40 knot winds and 20 foot seas.

The wind vane is 12-15 years old, but in good condition. It has some minor cosmetic flaws and corrosion. I'd be happy to provide close up, hi-res pictures on request. It comes complete with everything you see in the pictures minus the boat and SS mounting brackets.

The price of $1500 includes shipping in the CONUS.

Re: Auto-helm Self steering gear

Can I ask why it doesn't come with the brackets?

Re: Auto-helm Self steering gear

I left the brackets on the boat because removing them would leave holes in the stern which I did not want to deal with. The mounting bracket is quite literally nothing more than a piece of SS plate that has bent into the shape of an "ell". They are available from Scanmar or I believe it would not be that difficult to source locally.
