ATN Topclimber

Anybody have one of these in good shape they no longer need? I would prefer the new version but will consider any.

Thanks

Re: ATN Topclimber

BTW, the new Practical Sailor that just came out indicated that they like the original better than the new one. The new one has the advantage that you can use it to climb just about any halyard.

I picked up an original one a few weeks ago, but haven't tried it yet. I have new wind instruments that have to go up...

Thumbs down The ATN Topclimber is a piece of junk.

I was not going to post this in the 'WTB' thread but since it is no longer just a 'WTB' thread I will.

The ATN Topclimber is a piece of junk. I have one, and have used it on a dozen or so trips up the mast. I have lent it to others, and they have said the same.

Yes, it works... BUT the ascenders are so poorly designed as to require about 1/2 the climbing effort is absorbed by loading / unloading them on each cycle. The halyard has to be about guitar string tight, and even then you work about twice as hard as you should.

I would recommend anyone make their own, go to any competent store that sells climbing gear and buy better components for less money... you will be much more happy.

Re: ATN Topclimber

Well, I'm not climber so can't speak for what the experience would be like using a DYI system but I have one and, yes, getting it tight makes a big difference as does keeping away from the mast going up but I found that once I got into the rhythm it wasn't hard going up or down.

Re: ATN Topclimber

I've got the new version. Wore me out just going to my spreaders!
I found descending a bit of an adventure, getting used to only lowering the seat enough so that it still locks in. Should've gone with steps, not getting any younger! Still, better than nothing, I guess. Like wearing a big black diaper.
