Want To Buy: 30' to 50' sail boat in the Washington area

I am in the market to buy a used sail boat, I am looking for something in the 30' range to 50', I like the 372 Morgan Out Islander but will look at any others. I am in Spokane Washington so the boat needs to be in the Washington area.

most people wanting a boat up to 50' would not want 30 and vice versa....comes to cost of acquisition, main, slip, fuel, sails and the list goes on. What size would you want if you narrowed it down?

I think part of the confusion is the difference in price and size for boats in that range. You might find an older 30' boat for $15,000 or could spend $1,500,000 for a new 50' boat.

A typical 30' boat might have bunks for 4-5 people crowded in. A 50' boat could have comfortable accommodations for 6 and fit 8 or more in a pinch.

Might help a little if you mention a budget, how many will be on board and other details about your plans for the boat.

Thanks all for your thoughts for my boat, I have 40K to spend, Most likely there will be 3 people on board. The south pacific is our goal in around 18 months or so.

Sailboatlistings.com, Yachtworld.com and craigslist will help you narrow things down a bit. I've owned several boats and sailed on a lot of others and would not own anything more than 36 (unless of course it was a gift) after so many years of experience.

For that price and with 3 people, I'd recommend narrowing your search to the 30-35' range. Get a good, reliable hull with a few extras (Autopilot/windvane, RADAR, safety gear, navigation equipment, etc.) and have some money left over to buy the additional gear that you'll need. You could easily spend that money on a bare-bones 45' boat that needs a lot of extra cash thrown its way to make it seaworthy for offshore use.

Unfortunately, none of the Tayana 37's in the PNW are quite in his price range. Also, I've looked at a few of these and there is work to be done on top of purchase price. If OP heads in that direction, make sure you look closely at the condition of the bowsprits, teak decks and all thru-deck fittings. We get a lot more rain than some other places, and small leaks get out of hand quickly.

There's a couple Ingrid 38's that might warrant a look. There's an Allied Seawind. Try to close around 20 k or less cause ur gonna need the other half to refit and gear up. Sell your passengers into slavery as u cruise to keep the kitty full.
