28 Gal Stainless diesel fuel tank

Diesel fuel tank out of my Newport 30. Too big for my installation. It was installed transversely right over the stuffing box and transmission! 28 by 17 by 11.5 inches. In great condition with sender in place. $200 or will trade straight up for a smaller tank of equal quality. I need something closer to 20 by 16 by 12 inches to fit in the original location behind the stuffing box. Located at St Pete Muni on the west dock, slip WC-2.

Re: 28 Gal Stainless diesel fuel tank

Are you sure it's SS and not aluminum? SS fuel tanks are rare.

Why are they rare?
The cost?
Is the integrity of stainless better or less than aluminum when used for fuel storage?

Re: 28 Gal Stainless diesel fuel tank

Material and labor costs. Unless someone has their own shop with rems laying around. Likely the material thickness would be less w/SS due to weight/handling.

Re: 28 Gal Stainless diesel fuel tank

28 long 17 wide 11.5 height. Is the height measurement to the top of the fill spout? I see 5 fittings on top Sending unit fill spout return vent what is the other? Also how was the tank used and how old is it?
Thanks for your time

28 Gal Stainless diesel fuel tank

Just the dimensions of the tank itself. The filler adds another 4 inches or so right there. Don't know how old as it was in the boat when I purchased it. It's not the original but is in excellent condition. Connections are filler, fuel out, fuel return and vent. It was used as a tank feeding my 25HP universal.

Re: 28 Gal Stainless diesel fuel tank

Going with a Moeller poly tank that's not too expensive so would consider trade for something else sailboat related. That could of course be anything so if your interested just let me know what you have.
