27' Catalina set up for living aboard in the cold Alaska Winter

Well I just joined your forum today after many years looking and recieving inspiration. My girlfriend and I are selling our Catalina in Seward, Ak and picking up our new home in Puerto Vallarta at the end of the month. We have a few interested parties already but I figured we would also try posting our current home on here to see what everyone thinks! I have tons of photos that I will get up when I can or you can send me a private message and I can send them to you as well. We are asking $10,500 currently.

We are looking to sell our 27' Catalina sailboat we have been living aboard the past year. Its a great small sailboat for learning for the family or a singlehander with a big suite of sails. Not originally meant for liveaboards in Alaska but we have made it cozy, warm and able to stay off the grid. We spent last winter and spring cruising around exploring Resurrection Bay and Day Harbor.
This boat is older (1971) but still in great condition. The hull is great shape with a dry bilge, standing and running rigging are in good shape, and the sails are all in good condition. Previous owners have raced this boat single handed and the last owner sailed it north from Seattle. We are selling as we have just bought a second boat to live on.

Included with the sale is:
New in 2008-09 Yamaha 4 stroke outboard with lowering assist (runs excellent)
New in 2014 Air X Wind generator and 2 new deep cycle marine batteries
New in 2014 Standard Horizon VHF radio with DSC function and new antenna
New in 2014 Wallas Diesel stove and heater with heat blower
Newly reupholstered in 2014 V-Berth with memory foam cushions
Newly rewired lighting (still more to be done)
New in 2014 manual electric bilge pump
New in 2014 manual Jabsco head and hoses
Garmin GPS and depth sounder
Older removed pressurized Alcohol stove
Knotmeter
Depth sounder (original with boat)
Plenty of other stuff to get sailing now

Sails:
Main sail in good shape with 1 set of reef points
Working Jib in good shape
150% Genoa in good shape
170% Genoa in good shape
Heavy duty storm jib in good shape

Anchoring:
25# Bruce Anchor with chain and rode
Medium size Danforth with chain and rode
Small Fortress on stern with chain and rode

Hi captrhino,

Thanks for the kind words. We love her dearly we are just buying a slightly bigger stouter boat to do some cruising. Without looking at the specs offhand I believe she drafts slightly under 4 ft

Have you had any issues with the "Catalina Smile"? I believe this is the term used to describe a slight separation between the keel and the hull.

Since she's in Seward, you might tell what you did about insulating her.

Re: 27' Catalina set up for living aboard in the cold Alaska Winter

GaDawg727, We were warned of the Catalina smile. We have not seen the pearly whites of Storm's keel yet and have no issues with leakage. We were told that those early models were put together much more solidly than the later models and we hope that this is the case through the rest of her life.
Ann T. Cate, we haven't done much for insulation besides putting shiny bubble wrap in the V-berth. We also lined the cabin sole with the same material which made walking around in those colder months much more pleasant. The Wallas keeps the boat nice and toasty although I am sure it would be more efficient with better insulation. That being said temperatures last winter rarely dipped below 30 and it actually rained more than it snowed.
