Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall

Here is the Official Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall.

These are Perkins engines that Volvo Penta has Marinized for the recreational boating industry.

They are great engines, but are out of spec on the USA Emissions Standards.

New Engines with 2 year warranty will be provided.

Re: Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall

Cotemar, thanks for the head's up! The letter's body addresses both the 30hp and 40hp versions but the serial numbers at the top of the letter only indicate 30hp engines...is there a separate letter for the 40hp engines?

Cotemar, thanks for the head's up...again! Just checked on the VP site and my engines are subject to recall. Yow! Now we just have to find the time and place and get some new engines!

Will Volvo Penta honor replacements for second owners?

Re: Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall

The letter that was posted by Cotemar is a specific customer letter to the owner of the two engines with serial numbers listed on the letter. If you own engines which fall under the terms of the recall you should receive such a letter with your serial numbers listed.

Some of the important points brought out in the letter are:

- This is a voluntary recall on the part of Volvo Penta
- This is also voluntary on the part of the owner, there is nothing which requires the owner to replace his/her engines
- This applies only to US based vessels or those in US territories
- The recall applies to subsequent owners as well as original owners
- The recall began in July 2017 and will end 1 July of 2019, so there is no need to interrupt your sailing season to have the change done immediately
- If your engines are involved in the recall, you will receive a new two year warranty along with the new engines.
- It's possible that an engine in question is not emitting more than the allowable limits, but may sometime in the future as the result of normal wear and tear. These engines will also be replaced.

It looks like this only applies to the 30 and 40 hsp models. I have the D2-55's, and my serial numbers do not appear to be on the recall list. Have any D2-55 owners received recall letters? Just checking.

I haven't heard of anything other than for the 30s and 40s, but the VP website is the best source.

Re: Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall

Does anyone know why The cut off date for these recalls is March of 2008?
I know several D1-30 owners that missed the replacement by only 5 months. THey would like to know why ??

If you are not the original owner you need to get your engine registered with Volvo showing chain of purchase from original owner. Re check any first opinions that your engine is NOT covered . The second time around mine was covered .

THanks for any help

It goes by Engine serial numbers, not date. My 2009 engines were recalled.

Re: Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall

Thanks for the reply Cotemar,

I understand that they go by serial numbers , but why only till March of 2018 ? Why not earlier than that ....what was the reason for cutting it off then .
There are a lot of owners of 2007.s , Myself included who missed out by 5 months .
Thanks for the help

Probably has to do with EPA rules implemented around that time.

THanks Paul , Just going thru that link quickly it looks like March of 2008 was when they finally implemented the law/rule so everything before that was grandfathered. SHUCKS

I will still keep investigating though.
THanks again for the help

Re: Volvo Penta D1-30 & D2-40 Engine Recall

Necro'ing an oldish thread, anybody here have date and serial number range information for the affected engines? The boat we bought has two D2-40s from February 2013 but they were sold and registered to the previous European owner, so the serial # check comes back as not affected. I checked with the local VP dealer and either she doesn't have range information or won't share it. Will only do a serial number lookup and has told me that if the engines are registered to a non-US owner the lookup will come back negative (don't know the truth of that, just what I was told).

Working on getting the registration updated with VP, but that could take a while, and would like to know if the two I have are affected.

Thanks for any info.
