Volvo D1-30 Recall

I just received a notice from Volvo USA that my D1-30 engines have been recalled and will be replaced at no cost anyone. Has anyone else been informed

Interesting.

If you go to the Volvo Penta Recall page and plug in a valid VP D1-30 engine serial number, it tells you that there is a recall, but not what for.

It just state that you should call your Local VP service dealer to make an appointment.

Did you get a letter that gives you more detail about the recall?

Yes it said they did not meet the emission standards no mention of any mechanical problems i have replaced the heat exchangers twice on each engine volvo covered the first 2 felt the casting was very thin at elbow second set due to stray current
no other problems in 1500 hrs

USA Emission Standards recall can be expensive. Just ask VW.

We had the Volvo Penta D1-30 engines in our FP Mahe 36 that we owned for 7 years.

We never had any issues with those engines. They ran Great.

Re: Volvo D1-30 Recall

My engines are on the list also (2015 Lipari Evo). Working with the local Volvo dealer in Annapolis to schedule the replacement. I don't know the details or timing with the replacement yet.

Here is the txt from a letter that was sent to me from some folks in the Bahamas:

Voluntary Recall Campaign

Dear Volvo Penta dealer,

We are writing to inform you of an important voluntary recall campaign Volvo Penta is undertaking on D1-30F (30 horsepower) and D2-40F (40 horsepower) compact auxiliary marine engines manufactured between September 2008 and December 2016.

The Reason for this Campaign:

Our supplier has determined that a limited number of D1-30F (30 horsepower) and D2-40F (40 horsepower) compact auxiliary marine engines may be emitting pollutants in excess of the federal emission standards as defined in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Volvo Penta is addressing this condition by facilitating a voluntary recall which will replace these engines at no charge to the current owners. The replacement engine will be the same model as the engine currently installed in the customer's boat and it will come with a new 24 month limited warranty from Volvo Penta.

Volvo Penta dealers can find important information pertaining to this voluntary recall on Volvo Penta's Partner Network using the link below. Volvo Penta requests that you take the time to read through this information so that you will be properly prepared to assist your customers with this campaign. The FAQ should be used by your dealership to answer customer questions but should not be distributed outside your dealership.

This campaign begins July 1, 2017, and will continue through July 1, 2019.

The following materials pertaining to this campaign can be found on Volvo Penta Partner Network (www.vppn.com Service > Warranty > D1-D2 Campaign):

Dealer letter
Dealer FAQ – for internal purposes only
End-customer letter
Replacement engine order form
Change of ownership form

If you have any questions after reviewing the materials provided on VPPN, please contact us at vpa.warrantyadministration@volvo.com or 1-800-445-2628.

Re: Volvo D1-30 Recall

The Volvo Penta D1-30F and D1-40F are just Marinized Perkins 403D-11 engines.

I assume Perkins is the Supplier that the campaign letter talks about.

I would be timing new engine installs for over the winter layup, if your plans were not to go to the Bahamas.

Where are they sending the engines they replace?

Lots of places that don't require that level of emissions standard.

Funny you asked that, my wife just asked the same thing? I'll ask the Volvo services guys what they are being told to do with them.

Most likely the answer is that VP will "disable" them by ensuring that their engines can't be reused, and then sell them to scrapyards to be parted out.

Re: Volvo D1-30 Recall

I can't see anywhere that a "new" engine is mentioned, just a replacement of the same model.
My guess is that they are removing the engines, re-manufacturing them to the new specs and then replacing them in whatever boat needs them. Would be interesting to ask if this is the case!

Regards,
Richard.

Re: Volvo D1-30 Recall

I own a 2014 Lipari purchased from the original owner last summer. I just plugged in my serial numbers on the VP site but it did not show that the engines are being recalled. I live in the Annapolis area and would like to contact the VP dealer. Does anybody know who they are and who specifically I should contact?

Try Vosbury Marine. 303 Greenlee Rd. They quoted me a D1-30 at the show last year. John. Richard or Chris.
