Re: Square Head Main

Quick question, would you see any problems of using an attachment point D to the third car on the track instead of the sail itself, thus no sail work?

It is what I did on our Lipari. I used a Dynema loop at the car. Seemed to work. The big trick is using low stretch line and getting the length just right so that the head sets right. I used 6 mm Dynema seemed to work quite well but took a while to get the length right.

I ended up removing it as in the end I didn't find it that much of a problem. I was going up to undo the sail bag anyway so I just hook up the sail at the same time. The admiral can't easily attach it due to her height rather than weight but using a Winchard 2774 quick release snap shackle with the string release means she can drop it easily. it also meant that when reefing the head stay attached.

Re: Square Head Main

Looks to be a solution for this fellow (and many others) that seem to have problems with these square top mainsails.

New Square top mansail problem

I'll place a link on that other forum site.

Re: Square Head Main

Seems like that video shows the sail snapping into the car. I prefer a solution that lets you drop the sail completely without having to go undo that snap in.. Think I'll stick with the simple line that solves the raising AND lowering.

Re: Square Head Main

Very old thread, I know...

Captain Jay, could you share the product name, price, and source?
That looks like a good solution, to me.

Thanks.
Paul.

I think the video shows a Karver gaff lock.
