Seeking input on modern sheets/lines

New running rigging is overdue on our Belize 43. We are wondering what types and sizes of "modern" (e.g., Dyneema core) sheets people have installed and liked (or not) on a similar size FP. Starting with the jib sheets, we were thinking of the 1/2" Samson MLX. Wondering if that can handle the load of a 140% genoa in 25-30 knot winds, which are common where we sail in the San Francisco Bay.

Re: Seeking input on modern sheets/lines

I am not sure of the actual sail area, but the listed headsail is 475ft^2. Assuming this is correct, in 25kn the sheet load works out to be 1,280lbs.

Typically max load should be kept to 1/5 the mbl of the line, so 1/2" MLX with a 14,000mbl is really much larger than you need. 3/8" at 8,700lbs would be a conservative option, while 5/16 at 6,900 would work.

The real limit is going to be your deck hardware. You want to make sure the line is large enough that it will work in the clutches (if any), and the self tailors.

Re: Seeking input on modern sheets/lines

Thanks, Stumble. Yes, the 1/2" is probably overkill, but our winches are older (2002 Lewmar 48ST), and I think 1/2" is about as small as they will handle.

Anyone out there with a Belize or Lavazzi using these types of lines? What size and what are the pros and cons of Dyneema core vs. double braid polyester on a catamaran the size of a Belize?

The size range for the winch is 5/16 - 9/16. You can go much smaller than 1/2"

I decided to stay with double braid, it's half the price and easier on old man hands. I'm now changing the original genoa and main sheets, they last a long time.

Re: Seeking input on modern sheets/lines

I use plain material (polyester) where I handle the line. I use hi-tech material where I substitute metal (e.g. soft shackles, stays, etc.).

You have more choice when your boat is big as small diameter of some lines stops being a problem.

Re: Seeking input on modern sheets/lines

I agree with previous comments.

I've just replaced a few worn lines and for my boat the size seems more about how they feel and if they fit rather than strength. They all seem way oversized based purely on safe working loads.

Re: Seeking input on modern sheets/lines

I was given some excellent information on lines in a thread "When to replace rope". Would be worth a look.
