Lavezzi 40: Screecher (or Code Zero) Sail

I have an asymmetrical spinnaker on my Lavezzi 40….85m2 (about 850 ft2) made of 1.5 oz nylon.

I’m thinking of fitting a bow sprit and furling screecher (sometimes called a code zero sail I think).

I would be very interested to know from any Lavezzi owners who have this sail what size it is and what material it’s made from?

A code zero is a specialized type of asymmetric that is cut very flat, and intended to go upwind. Typically they require a very stiff pole with a bobstay. Gennikers are a somewhat upwind sail that don't require this much reinforcement.

Can you be a little clearer exactly which sail you are thinking of?

I have fitted tightly cut 6oz screecher which is furled on the bowsprit and can be used anywhere from 70-150. On my Orana it is 80 squ.m. On the Helia 85 squ m. For the Lavezzi I would suggest 75 squ.m. Very useful sail up to 20knots, especially on a reach. Beyond 150 use a symmetric 1.5oz spinnaker.

I have just fitted a Selden bowsprit kit to my Lavezzi with a 1.5oz asymmetric kite.
The thing with a screecher is that it needs a lot stronger bowsprit and the Seldon is not up up to that as I found out after I had bought it.
Anyway the assy is great although it is big it is very easy to handle.
Obviously it can't go as high as the screecher but where I sail the wind seems to be mostly on the nose or behind so a screecher wouldn't have worked for me anyway.

Hi CC,

The pole kit cost me $1400AUD but they maybe more now.
I'm not sure of the area but the assy is 15.5 m luff, 14.1 m leach and 8.55 m foot.
I believe this is close to the max size whilst maintaining easy handling.
My sail maker is an 18foot skiff sailor so too much kite is barley enough for those guys.

I posted this on a different thread but if any of you are using a code 0, are you sheeting on the inside or outside of the shrouds and what angle to the wind can you do. My A4 Asym can get 80 degrees and maybe a little less. I'd like something that gets me to 50, maybe 45 if everything is perfect.

A guy up my way has a made carbon prodders for around that sort of money for my boat and a lot of others. Might be worth checking a local guy? Or if you want my carbon guy's details PM me.

The pole and screecher are truly magical particularly in under 1o knots where I sail when many are motoring.

I have the factory-supplied screecher on the factory bowsprit on a Facnor furler. Can go upwind 50-60 if i) front edge is tight and straight, and ii) sheeted in, almost into the shroud.
Really helps under 10kn, and getting better speed up to 20kn. I was told you can hold it up until 25kn without waves.

Cannot use it awa 140+, but I am planning to make the bow blocks to move the sail to the windward bow.

Off thread I know..

But I had a Lavessi and it developed the pox (osmosis) as did another one I knew just round the corner..

Have other peeps had similar or were we just unlucky?

Sorry to hear that Tomahawk, unfortunately Lavezzi's are well known for their osmosis issues.
There are a few threads talking about it and the manufacturers ambivalence towards owners.
How bad is it?
A full bottom peel and good dry out with heat blankets is usually required to fix the problem.

Thanks for your comments. I did think it was a problem withthe entire series.. Lucky for me we sold it without too much trouble. Have now migrated to Outremer.. sorry..
