SABA 50 - FIRST VIDEO

HEY
just browsed youtube on the saba 50, the new 50 ft catamaran from fountaine pajot, nothing yet, but just found a proper video of that boat on dailymotion.com
here is the link, enjoy !!
08/09/2014 - Fountaine Pajot Saba 50 - Vidéo Dailymotion

p.s. - it's in french, but just to translate a little bit, they're saying that their efforts were concentrated not just on overall confort, but on the performance - at 7 knts of wind the boat is going at 6knts minimum, and at winds of 20 knts, the boat is going at 12knts and more......... i think this sounds good, doesn't it? more or less the performance of the helia 44, if not even a bit better?

Re: SABA 50 - FIRST VIDEO

Yes, the audio says that she makes 6 kts of SOG in 7 kts of wind true when reaching (if I understrood correctly.)
Outremer (if she's kept very light) can do this. I believe Saba will sail much better than Sanya and any recent models of Lagoon, included the L 52, but 6 kts SOG with 7 kts true seems to me impossible, even under spinnaker and on flat waters..
Alex, let's agree on 4,5-4,8 kts which is already too good ..

Cheers

Re: SABA 50 - FIRST VIDEO

I have had Australian buyer who will take delivery of first SABA 50 in Cannes sailing on my Helia.

Remember all numbers quoted are

(1) In flat water
(2) Light weight
(2) No water or fuel on board
(3) With a thumping great screecher

Given the screecher equipped the ratio of sail area to length is around 3x which is about the same for my Helia.

Longer displacement will probably mean a little better performance. Based on Helia performance I would put 4.5Kn at 7kn true wind as realistic.

Of course this is in absolutely ideal conditions. Put fuel and water in and you add to metric ton of weight. Get a bit of chop and swell and she will slow down very quickly.

The other trick I have seen done is to set the speed measurement device to logging mode with very frequent updates and then check the maximum speed. On the Helia for instance this will typically be around 12-14kn, whilst the average mean speed is around 8kn.

Re: SABA 50 - FIRST VIDEO

if the boat is more than 50 ft long does it require a different license to skipper the boat accross the ocean than a 6pac license?
