Re: Rig and Sails
The locking mechanism is definitely not strong enough. I put a nice strong cable tie through it and it has been fine for quite a while now.

Re: Rig and Sails
I've got two extra winches that I would like to add on each side, for handling the gennaker aft sheets. Any reason for not mounting them on the aft deck just in front of the aft stansions? I haven't seen anyone do that yet, so I thought I might ask first The aft blocks will be mounted somewhere between the 3 stansion legs.

Re: Rig and Sails
Edmund,
I don't see any reason for the aft winch not to work in that location.
I think FP mounts all there aft winch inboard a bit in, so you do not have to crouch down so far on your knees and your knees will be on the cockpit cushion.
You may have to take care, so as not to loose a winch handle overboard when mounted so close to the toe rail.

Re: Rig and Sails
Seems I will get a 2007 Mahe #18 as my next boat. The price was so nice, I could not resist. Still in the final stages of completing the deal.
The boat comes with the factory gennaker pole (and the original furler, still unused in the box).
Can someone give me the dimensions of the gennaker?
Is there any diagram of the sailplan that shows measurements?
I have searched the forum but haven't found anything.
Thanks!

Re: Rig and Sails...!@#$! BATTENS!
Anyone know why it would be so hard to reinstall the battens? We removed them when sending the sail for repair last fall. Now, we insert the batten, ensuring it enters the back pocket. Next, we insert the front fitting BUT have to tug on the sail mightily to get the screw holes in the batten pocket to line up with the sail holes! In some cases (so far) it's been impossible to have them line up. Suggestions?

Re: Rig and Sails
Could there by elastic pockets in batten sleeve at far end? On my day sailer, I struggle with this until I remind myself that batten pocket design incorporates a "suspended pocket" that is dynamic to ensure it stretches the sail appropriately.

Re: Rig and Sails
RK, unfortunately, no elastic pockets here. The battens are fiberglass poles that are slid into the sail pockets. There are plastic fittings at each end of the sail pocket that the poles fit into. These fittings are held in the sail pocket with screws; the screw holes in the mast end fitting aren't lining up with the holes in the sail. Moreover, the fitting at the leading edge of the sail has threads that the sail slug screws into, then you attach the slug to the car on the mast. One of these fittings has the sail slug screw fitting (say that three times fast) broken off inside. I'll need a replacement for that, but will have to go through FP directly for it...a slow, expensive process at best. For now, I'll probably leave the affected battens(s) out.

Re: Rig and Sails
Should never have to take the main sail off.
We have been rapping the main for winter storage for years now.

Re: Rig and Sails
We had to take our main off for cleaning and repair after the trip up from Tortola. We'd noticed (after departure) that the ring at the head of the sail where the main halyard attaches had worn through about a quarter of the stitching securing it.

Oh, in that case, then you need at least three or four very strong men to help you put the battens back in. I helped a friend put his backing and it was strenuous.

Re: Rig and Sails...halyard replacement
All:
Looking for best method to replace the main/jib halyards which are 'in mast' at one point, emerging at masthead. I've gone through this thread; seen nothing specific, though might've missed it. I've considered butting the old/new ends together with tape, and raising gently until the new appears outside at the masthead, but perhaps there's a better way? I don't want my scheme to part inside the mast during replacement. We're leaving ~Oct 2 from NH to winter in FL Keys and Bahamas, perhaps further. The rigging on Golden Dawn is (I think) original. This boat spent two years in charter service in Tortola.
