Bahia 46: Replacing Masthead Sheaves

Hi. Has anyone replaced their sheaves at the top of the mast? Can it be done without removing the crane?

The cranes here fly off as soon as you start climbing up (evil grin!)

For most of them, you just have to pull out the axle and the sheaves will slide out forward/backward. The problem with doing them in place is what do you use to haul yourself up, maybe a spinnaker halyard??

If you are switching from wire to rope halyards you don't need to change the sheaves unless. If the sheaves are rope/halyard they will work just fine. Have sailed more than 12,000 miles with wire/rope sheaves and rope halyards. Might want to inspect the sheaves, in any case, just to be sure that the wire hasn't created any sharp edges that could cut the rope. Hasn't done it on either of my boats, however.

We had number one son (I hate heights ) up the mast the other day putting new wind gear on. The main halyard has been very stiff for some time and he noticed that the sheave was shattered and could soon cause a jam up. Clyde and I have just spent all morning mousing the topping lift and main halyard into reverse slots as the topper is not so important. We are on holiday at the moment and know this is only a short term fix and are just trying to plan for minor or major long term repair.
