Athena 38: Main sheet traveller

Hi New to the forum just bought an Athena 38, have sailed it for a couple of weeks,
Now want to start getting a few small jobs done
Would like to replace the main sheet traveller car, not the track,
anybody no were these are available
boat is a 1997

Why not the track?

Assuming the track is in good shape and is a current size then just go to whichever manufacturer made the original and buy their new version. On the other hand the track is almost always the cheap part of an install.

A new Harken rig for instance for your boat is going to be close to a thousand dollars. The track is only about $100.

If its a standard one (you can tell if it does not run free) then its Amiot. If the track is ok i.e. Not scored too badly then all you need is a set of torlon balls, the car that is.
It may be easier and better to find out what size they are and buy Harken etc than to source Amiot stuff, there are a number of frustrated owners looking for Amiot (Goiot) stuff on the web. Good luck and please post what you find.

It's an Amoit and parts aren't available. If the car is mechanically sound a good rigger can put new balls in it and possibly sheaves. Otherwise it's time to think new traveler. The profile on the track is not compatible with any other brand of car.

You have inspired me to do something about my traveller which sticks. Mine is an Amiot long car with 2 toggles 260mm long and the track is 32.8mm wide at top. According to the web it takes 130 8mm delrin balls. My plan is to use torlon which lasts longer and deforms less easily. Harken use 8mm as I believe do Lewmar, but you can get torlon from specialist plastic ball manufacturers as well. They are not cheap but far less than a new track and traveller.

I have a Belize and just blew out the traveller car off the track, going to replace the whole system with garhauser track and car. Thought about replacing just the balls in the car but the track has some scoring. The boat was x charter and no maintaince was done on the boat,I'm systemically working through the boat replacing every clamp and fitting I can.

Has anyone replaced the fridge freezer (240v) with a 12 volt unit?

Not rushing into that one without lots of research.

Have just replaced the Amiot traveller balls and it was very easy. Built a gaffer tape dam around the traveller in situ.
Then remove both end caps. You may need heat to remove the cap screws, I used a hot air gun which allowed easing the screws out.
Push out all the balls using a thin rod. Clean out.
Replace one end cap using anti seize compound on the screws.
Push balls in both sides until full. Load the remaing end cap with balls using soap or similar to hold the balls in place and replace and secure.
Now watch out as the car hurtles across in use rather than needing a kick
