Re: Interior

what I am about to do is to order two full size bed mattress in latex from Ikea (SULTAN ELSFJORD Latex mattress - Full - IKEA)
Am pretty sure this will be a no brainer to put them in the cabins as they are delivered rolled.

When I see your description mark Cotemar, I guess there is a difference between the mahe 36 and the 36 evo. I am saying this because my mahe mattresses are not square at all. They have the size of a full bed at the head and of a queen at the feet. So the mattress you suggest would not fit I think in my Mahé.

My mattresses will be smaller than the current ones but I will have top mattress, standard sheets and some space on the side to change sheets more easily than today.

I will let you know the outcome of this

Re: Interior

We cut in vents under seats in settee. Have a problem with condensation in these lockers as it's very humid, and we have the AC on in the main cabin. We keep our canned and dried food under there, so not good!

I think the vents will allow better air circulation.

These are actual wood floor vents, picked them up for $8 each at the hardward store. Cheaper than white plastic. Coated them with a non toxic finish.

Re: Interior

The vents we cut in under the settee seats seem to make big difference. Before we were getting condensation so bad that water was running down the inside of the locker and dripping on the floor. Now we don't have any of that, lockers are dry.

Door Stoppers

Mahe’s

Al ( longislandsail ) on "Southern Cross" had a nice idea of using magnetic door stoppers on the doors.

You can buy these at Home Depot for $6 each and they are easy to install in under 30 minutes each.

They really work nice and keep the doors from moving around if you forget to close them when underway. Your guest will not have to look around for some sort of locking mechanism or undo anything. They just work, very simple.

Maple Cabinet for over the sink

Mahes,

You can never have enough storage, so I had a cabinet maker build a maple cabinet for over the sink. I really like the rounded corners on most of our cabinets, so incorporated that style into the new cabinet

Cabinet cost $250 us unfinished.
I put four coats of Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane-Clear Satin on it.

Took one hour to install. Removed the access panel, then remove the light from it and drilled and mounted the light on the new cabinet. Then mounted the cabinet using four large wood screws into the fiberglass. Now if I need access to the helm wiring I will just remove the cabinet.

This worked out so well that I plan on adding a few more cabinets.

See attached print.

Mahes,

You can never have enough storage, so I had a cabinet maker build a maple cabinet/seat with drawers for in front of the Saloon Table. We really like the rounded corners on most of our cabinets, so incorporated that style into the new seat with drawers. It seats two comfortably. We did not want the top loading dumpster diving setup, so we opted for two drawers. It has rubber feet, so we can move it if needed.

Cabinet cost $425 us finished with four coats of Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane-Clear Satin

It has a 2 inch foam seat which we made and is held in place with Velcro.

See attached print.

Hello, I did replace the mattresses by regular full size latex ones from Ikea.
I added a standard slatted base.
I have a bit of extra space on the side now as it is not a perfect fit so I will think about a little box or something and use the extra space.
Much much cheaper option that any custom made mattress

Re: Interior

Cotemar, Wow I love the cabinet over the sink idea. What a great addition. I think the new seat cabinet is good too, however with living aboard all the time, Im not willing to to give up that space. Beautiful work!

Velcro Door stoppers

Why didn't I do this 4 years earlier? Velcro door stoppers. Works well. Fast in use. You can adjust the tension on the door as you like, for sailing or marina.
Light. Cheap. Simple to install. No hole drilling, keeping the boat original.

On the doors I mounted beige self-sticking velcro, the furry side. (except for the bathroom, where I used white). Length about 7 cm, bent around the corner of the door to prevent wear to the paint of the door.
Check whether the gap between the door and the bulkhead is big enough to accomodate this.

For the wooden panels on the hull I used non-sticking velcro, the hook-type, white, about 35 cm per strap. At the end I thickened the velcro by folder it over 3 times, and stapling it. Unscrew a screw of these panels, and stick the velcro behind the wooden panel (which is thicker at the top, and thus has an edge at the rear).

At the bottom corner of the doors there are soft round rubbers to protect the door and the lining on the hull, see picture

Re: Interior

The 1st mate got tired of having curtains on all the storage cabinets.

I made 13 new doors out of 2.25"inch [57.15mm] wide Maple 8 ply wood frames and inserted mesh just like a screen door.

The frames and mesh are very light weight which works well on a cat.

The air circulates better and you cannot see whats inside the cabinet because of the mesh.

Your one step ahead of me. I just finished installing the doors this afternoon.
I plan on installing knobs and then magnetic door latches.
