Orana 44: In General

Hi:

In response to query, I carry a ParaTech Delta Drogue, a Galerider, and a ParaTech Sea Anchor. I keep the Sea Anchor pre-rigger in a deck box I installed just behind the steering station bench (figured not to use the comfortable lounge chairs on our circumnavigation, and the extra deck stowage has been great for the chain/rode/line associated with sea anchor, as well as the Snuba compressor and airlines.) I love my dockbox, throughbolted into the roof of the master cabin below, with bolts situated so they are accessible via cutouts in the ridges that outline the roof lining -- I have large rubber washers to distribute the load.

Thankfully, no deployment needed yet, and I'm still trying to talk myself into a dry run in 20 knot winds and 10 foot seas ... I know that's best practice, but I keep thinking ... "tomorrow, I'll test this out ..."

Our second Orana, this time four cabins and hull number 55 has been delivered to Marmaris last week. I didn't see it yet but my colleagues are saying that she's in very good shape after long and tiring trip from La Rochelle in record time and with very little engine hours.
Meanwhile, I have to say that recently delivered Orana's and Lipari's (sorry I haven't seen any Mahe yet) seem to be better built and with more attention to details.
Next week I will be sailing the new Orana and will tell you if there is any difference with the new top square sail.

my Lipari will touch water last week of may in la rochelle, and then long trip to french mediteranean cost !

To confirm my previous post.. I've tested today the new Orana and there are some improvement over previous version that we had bought 3 years ago.
-the new model comes with better ventilation in the saloon,
-finish is somewhat better,
-more imortantly, Incedence top square main sail is standard.

Unfortunately, one of the main issue is not adddressed to yet;still one winch and couple of stopper missing..

Althought the boat was very light on trial (2 people on board, no water, almost no fuel..) the performance was impressive..
With one reef on the main and at around 14-16 knts true, boat speed was

-8,1-8,2 knts (SOG) from 90 AWA
-6,8-7 knts (SOG) from 35-40 AWA

hi gordon, I have hull #30 and last fall replaced the port saildrive upper transmission plates-two months earlier I did the strbrd drive. I was just under 600 hrs on the engines. Of course I was just a month out of warranty, so no help from Volvo other than a huge parts bill of $700/drive. All Volvo would do was inform me to start using the regular engine diesel oil in the drives rather than the previously recommended transmission fluid.
not a happy camper here but still love the boat.

Hi Mari's,
We followed Volvo's recomendations and changed to engine oil and now twelve months on have had no more clutch silippage. Engine hours now 1200.

Thanks for the update... I feel a little better, too bad they did not let us know earlier on about the potential oil problem -- but, of course then they have had to warrant the excessive wear on those plates.
My name is Steve and again thanks for the reply.
You don't happen to fly an asymetrical do you? I just bought one and am in the process of figuring out the best way to handle a traveller on the tack line and then getting that port sheet back to my helm station without hanging someone in the bridge cockpit area, haha. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve,
No we do not use an asymetric but use a gennica and run the port sheet to the tender winch mid way on aft section of boat. You need two to trim, one on the helm watching the sail and one on the winch, not an ideal setup.

An assymetric is just another name for a gennaker.

You might be able to do it by putting a double block aft on the starboard quarter where you probably already have a single turning block and leading the port sheet all the way across the stern and then turning it up to the helm station. That will be a very long sheet and there may be friction issues.

My memory is that there is an issue with the lead from that turning block up to the helm but I have not turned my mind to solving that.

I will look this weekend.

Hi Daniel,
Yes we have sold 'La Rochelle', she is now in Middle Harbour off Castlecraig. A lovely family, am sure they will see you on the water up in Pittwater one day.
We sailed past your Orana around the western side of Scotland Island during the Multihull Rendezvous a few weeks back. That was our last sail on our boat.
We will be picking up a new boat from FP this time next year, and Lou and I will then sail her home via the Med, Atlantic, Caribbean, Panama, Pacific and Aus.
We have no set return date so will sail when we have fair weather and arrive whenever.
The next twelve months will go quickly am sure, also much to do between now and then.
