Helia transmission problem

Mon Amie, my Helia (hull 13), has under 900 hours on each engine. I just delivered her to the BVI and have never had engine or transmission problems (never). A few weeks after delivery, she just finished her first charter, and the management company is reporting to me that the port-side transmission is slipping, in which case, they've said they will re-build the transmission.

What could've happened on one charter to all of a sudden require re-building the tranny? I've heard of a handful of Helia problems, common among most Helia's, but this is the first I've heard (and am now experiencing) tranny issues.

Re: Helia transmission problem

Are you running oil or ATF in the sail drives? Volvo switched to oil several years ago because the ATF would dissolve the abrasive on clutch plates. I replaced the clutch pack in one of our Mahe's for this reason. Everything I have seen since have been running oil. In either case the clutch pack is the most likely problem if it's slipping.

It's not likely that a single charter could do this. Torn up prop damaged drive dampener maybe. But if a clutch pack went out it's likely been going for a while.

I hope I was on oil, but I'll be asking about that going forward. I agree that it probably wasn't a single charter that did it in, but before then there were no obvious symptoms. Arrrggg!

Re: Helia transmission problem

I am not saying it is, however:

If People are not educated about pausing between forward and reverse, and slam it one into the other, it reportedly grossly wears on the internal clutches...

You have to put it into neutral and pause to let it stop turning... And, the sail drives take a special synthetic oil for best results...

Further, IMO it is unfair and inaccurate to refer to a Volvo Saildrive problem as a Helia problem. It has nothing to do with it being a Helia.

Kind regards, Helia 44 "Avalon"

Re: Helia transmission problem

Fortunately, it turned out to be a loose cable and she doesn't require a rebuild. Phew! Dodged another big bill. It's always something though. I escaped rebuilding the transmission only to have to replace my outboard!
