Re: Engines

gipsgh,

You are no alone. I had my port engine MDI black box fail at 400 hours.
VP replaced the MDI black box and all has been good since then.

If you hot wire the engine to start it. How did you get the fuel solenoid to open and stay open while the engine is running?

Re: Engines

2013 Helia 44 AVALON here....

Just a note regarding the MDI... It is only necessary for the remote starting, easily bypassed to run without the meters. These are old school diesels, outside of the EPA, DPF, SCR, complications. A few bits of wire with aligator clips, and it can be started to get you out of trouble... Going long distance, a couple of spares might be advisable, However: Now, regarding the MDI reliability, if voltages and electronics are OK, I am not sure they are a major problem.. For both to fail together, could be chance or some voltages out of parameters?

"AVALON" 2013, has 775 /777 hours port and stbrd... All good...

Kind regards, AVALON, Mooloolaba Harbour, Australia

Re: Engines

Thanks Cotemar, Helia44.

The fuel shutoff solenoid is in the open position when the relay is open. Only when tasked to shut down does the relay close, activating the shutoff function of the fuel solenoid. That shut off function is the same mechanically as the 90deg or so turn on the manual fuel shutoff lever. As Helia points out, the engine is pretty old school and the more I learn about it (even when troubleshooting!), the more I love it for its simplicity...black box excluded.

As far as I know, input voltage to the MDI has been fairly stable, especially on the port engine dedicated starter battery. Sure the house batteries used to start starboard fluctuate, but I haven't seen it outside a normal range.

Thanks!

Re: Engines

Hi

The MDI on one of my DI-30s failed when it had about 2 (yes Two) hours on it!
It must have been a manufacturing defect.

I was also told you can just short out the connectors to start it. Quote: " one is for the preheater and one for the started solenoid so you can't do any damage"

Re: Engines

Thought Id give you an alternative to adding the gauges to the volvo engines.

I have just recently installed 2 x YDEG-04 engine gateways from

Yacht Devices Engine Gateway for Volvo Penta and J1939 engines

I like them so much I have also purchased their Voyage recorders as well.

They are very simple to install and setup. They plug in between the Tacho and engine. They then plug into the Instrument network (Raymarine in our case but also works with Garmin and others).

We have a Lipari and FP don't link the Engines so I needed 2 (1 per engine) but maybe the bigger units may be bridged in which case you may only need 1. The Engine gateways transforms all the Engine data into the appropriate nmea 2000 message. Most chart plotters have a "DATA" screen that can display all the engine data and other data elements. We have Raymarine and it is highly configurable. So now on the chart plotter I have both engines, with Tacho, Temp, Alternator voltage, engine hours and lots of other data, it also sends the alarms through as well. Their doco is very good, and their support seems good even though I haven't needed much to setup.

This is a nice piece of kit, and appeals to my inner nerd. With their end of season 30% off offer it was very reasonable and gives me more data than I know what to do with.

The limits of data are what the Volvo sends. So in our case the D1-30 doesn't have a sensor for Oil Pressure so there is no data and FP don't link the fuel tank level to the engine so no tank level (But i'm looking at ways to do that as well), but I was amazed at the amount of data that was available, and now that it is available on the network it can be recorded by the voyage recorder and examined on my PC later.

The only warning is these come from Russia (don't worry all manuals in good english) but the postage from there is free but takes a long time. (6 weeks to Australia).

Nice stuff. No drilling holes, Available on any chartplotter and on the iPad in my case being raymarine. Install is almost plug and play. Took longer to undo the panels to get to the back of the tacho than to install.

Easy fix. I have just installed 2 on my D1-30f. It's just a simple setting on the configure file. Just need a micro sad card to configure. If you need help PM me and I can send you the files that I used

Volvo Penta D2-55 SS exhaust elbow part = 3589544

Helia 44 Owners,

Volvo Penta D2-55 SS exhaust elbow part = 3589544

This HDI Marine Stainless Steel exhaust elbow $395 with $15 shipping = $410

ebay item number: 231994385652

If your shocked at the cost and the fact that the VP factory exhaust elbow are still made from cast iron.

As most of us know; salt water, heat & cast iron don't work well together. The factory cast iron ones last about 5 to 7 years.

These new Stainless Steel exhaust elbow will last a lifetime.

Purchase includes:
Exhaust Riser that replaces Volvo Penta P/N 3589544 / 21424345 list price $587.90
Gasket that replaces Volvo Penta P/N 888596 list price $78.42 (MODEL C, D, E, F ONLY)
Urethane seals (one large, one small) replaces black rubber OEM seals

Engine Sea Water Impeller

Helia 44 Owners,

For those of you that do your own engine maintenance.

Here is a faster way to make checking or changing your engine sea water impeller.
You will need 4 Wing Bolts per cover, so order 8 for both engines.

No screwdriver is needed. Just hand loosen and tighten using these Wing Bolts.

304 Stainless Steel, Butterfly Screw Bolts, Wing Bolts
Metric - M5 x.08 thread X 10 mm Long
eBay item number: 281875353216

Note: The Volvo Penta D2-55 sea water pump has an O ring seal that sits in the face of the pump.
See the RED ring in the photo. Make sure to put the O ring seal back into this groove in face of the pump before re-installing the cover.

Re: Engines

Helia 44 Owners,

Here's a few pictures to show another place to install the Engine Temperature gauges.

You would need the 3 foot extension cables.

Volvo Penta # 874918 Thermometer, coolant water, Black 40-250 °F, $96
Volvo Penta # 874709 Mounting kit, Black D=52mm, $20 usd
Volvo Penta # 874759 Boat 3 FT Extension Cable $21

Total cost to install both temp gages $117 each X 2 = $234

The Volvo Penta EVC instruments are plug'n'play. They come with connectors to be connected into the tachometer.

They come in black or white and in C or F

All you need for installing is a 52 mm (2-1/16” inch) hole saw.

Thanks for this info and pictures, Cotemar! I bought these gauges last summer, but got stuck trying to figure out where to put them on the pedestal! I appreciate seeing your install, and now know what to do.

No Worries, as I had purchased the Volvo Penta Temp Gauges last year also.

Just took me a while to find a good place for them as there is not a lot of extra space on the Helia 44 helm.

This mounting location is perfect for viewing and access to the back side for wiring.

I bought a pair of these for the Yanmars on my Salina. Yanmar shows replacing the original ones at the 1,000 hour engine service. These are so much nicer, and less expensive it was shocking. I heartily recommend them too!
