Orana 44: Cooking and Ventilation

Hi all.

My wife and I currently have our home on the market in order to buy a cat and live aboard for however long we enjoy it. We are initially planning to cruise round the uk while a.we get used to the boat and b.our folks get used to the idea of us not being around all the time, with the aim of heading further south later.
My wife is a very keen cook and one of the the things that we've seen mentioned on the web re the Orana, which is a boat we very much like the look of but haven't managed to see "in the flesh" yet, is a lack of ventilation in the galley area. Did FP ever rectify this or are there any known fixes. I would imagine a hatch above would interfere with the lines run aft, winches etc.

welcome aboard--my overhead hatches are always open--as far as exhaust of galley air--- is complicted. for intake of fresh air when cooking-- does the job. each boat is different-- when you find the boat that captures your heart and makes ye want .... then you will work with the complications..

Hi Jon,

The problem you mentioned is not an easy one to solve because of the winches above that don't leave a space for a hatch. This issue has been solved on new Helia by moving the kitchen to port side.
Quite frankly, we never had problem in the aeration of the galley. Overall Orana is a very good and solid boat, we didn't have any major issue.

We have never really found ventilation in the galley a problem. Occasionally in the cold with the cockpit doors closed there is a bit of an issue with steam/condensation but a quick wipe around solves the issue.

Thank you for your thoughts guys, much appreciated. I know it's not a big issue but from what I can see it's one of very few little things that I can see might not make it our "ideal" boat. Reefing from the cockpit is another but that is well discussed on this and other forums.
The cooking/condensation thing may be more of an issue living aboard with the uk weather. I suppose the compromise then will be head south sooner. Shame Speaking of weather, has anyone seen a neat way of providing good protection at the helm?

I know that the Orana launched before ours installed a hatch on the cabintop over the galley ... be careful, as I think they cut thru the 12v wires that run to the table lights ...

That said, we just completed a circumnavigation, and used the fan over the stove, and also bought a 12v fan on a clip which we'd put on the small counter between the sink/wastebasket and the companionway for additional ventilation.

Last, any time we'd boil water for pasta, we'd drain in the cockpit to keep the steam outside ...

All in all, not so much hot cooking in hot climes anyway, so more than manageable.

Thank you for all your advice folks. When the holiday season is over ( We run a B&B Penrowan Cottage and B&B, Crackington Haven, Cornwall) we are hoping to drive down to La Rochelle and see the Orana they have there, if its still for sale. Its not a Maestro but it will give us more to ponder on.
