Anchor System

I'd love to hear from anyone who could give us some advice on anchoring set-up on the Helia. We're planning on circumnavigating, and I've based the max anchoring depth on 30m/90ft (the sort of depths we expect to encounter in the Society Islands).

We're picking up our new Helia in July and after spending the morning doing some research, I've come up with the following system.

And advice would be welcome!

Primary Anchor
· Rocna 40
· 90m, G40, 5/16” chain
· 50m, 3/4”, 3-strand nylon, spliced with stainless thimble
· 3/8” HT shackle
Secondary Anchor
· Mantus 25
· 20m, G40, 5/16” chain
· 100m, 5/8”, 3-strand nylon, spliced with stainless thimble
· 3/8” HT shackles

Re: Anchor System

Rocna and Mantus are the same style anchor, no?

I might have a different style (Fortress) for a secondary that I might also use in different conditions where it might be better (mud). Also lighter for the same size, for kedging, off the stern, etc.

Re: Anchor System

If you are gonna go with 5/16 chain, and you can get chain in Europe, get Maggi 8mm Aqua7. Much stronger.

Re: Anchor System

If you are doing Mantus because you can break it down for storage why not 2 Mantus of the primary size. Then you will have a real backup if you lose your primary. Then add a Fortress for soft mud and kedge.

Re: Anchor System

Ryan, don't know what information you used for sizing, but here are some handy tables to check against. All the rest are anchor choices and chain type. A "Danforth-type" has always been recommended as a kedge, with the Fortress recommended because of its light weight. All the best on your new boat. Congratulations.
