You must be joking!

I attempted to learn the basics here but WOW!
There is no way I can learn anything without getting started. I unloaded several maps from the recommended sites who claim compatibility. I am using a nexus 7 (Android). I press on the wrench icon.A new screen comes up and I press on charts. Chart files automatically gets highlighted and this screen comes up.Click image for larger version

I have been reading everything I can find. The screen will not allow me to create a new directory file which I attempted to add any random word, test, for this purpose and it will not recognize a single word. I can not access or add any downloaded map in opencpn. I installed the Oruxmaps app and I can bring up downloaded maps there but can not transfer to opencpn.

Once again, I am using a nexus7 Android. Thousands of posts on binary Linus beta derivatives or whatever tells me nothing at this point. Save a life! HELP PLEASE!

Re: You must be joking!

Check off the left left box (force full databse rebuild) and click on Apply and OK.

That is necessary whenever new charts are added.

Cool Re: You must be joking!

Right, so:
Press on wrench icon
Press charts box

I see what you are saying. I tried to add a new directory. I press add directory. I press + new bar and I type in "test" as my folder name. The screen freezes and I have to reboot.

I don't think what shows up as the only directory:
storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.opencpn.opencpn/files
is the right place to be. I toggled through the sub files and I suspect I am not where I started. The files of other maps that I wish to associate with opencpn are not in this directory.

There is no need to create a new directory.

Where did you store the files that you downloaded? You need to browse for it, rather than create a new directory.

Re: You must be joking!

Thanks for the assistance.
I can not get a browse option. I located the files in my downloads nexus file.

How did you bring up the browse function?

Re: You must be joking!

Or do I need to if I located the map file download? What would be the procedure to send from my documents app to opencpn?

Click on Add Directory - that will allow you to browse for the directory.

Re: You must be joking!

Try this.... after you select add directory, don't select +......

Do you see listing of all the folder on your phone? Do you know where the charts were downloaded to on your phone?

Edit to add,... as Jack says, beat me to it.

If so browse the list of folders to that location and select the folder with the charts.

If you select the plus sign I think you have to type the file path to the folder, not create a folder.

Re: You must be joking!

You are the best.
The browse menue came up when I pressed the folder icon that had two periods and no letter. I was able to get the orux map download over to the directories list.
What next?

Re: You must be joking!

Just to add, there is no browse button. Browse is a verb here.

The same screen that shows the plus sign at the bottom also shows the folder directory above the plus sign.

Tap through the folders (browse) to find the folder containing your downloaded charts. Usually in the Download folder, go figure.

That's it I think. Click ok or apply.

Make sure your GPS is on. Zoom in and see if charts start showing.

Re: You must be joking!

To get started, the USPS Navigation 15 chapter 8 has a very easy step by step start up / set up of OpenCPN and VPP2. I know I complain a lot about how they are leaving out the old stuff in favour of EN, but they did a descent job of it.

Did you force a rebuild?

Re: You must be joking!

Yes, all directories scanned and updated also force rebuild.
Something attempted to load as there was a yellow progress bar loading but the map does not show. I only get the low resolution world map when zoomed in.
