Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

Bonjour Peter,

Enjoy to make happy users of Xinutop !

About update:
As the current version is very stable, generally I wait about 6 month after a LTS version to get external apps outside of Ubuntu repositories also updated, and sometime the first releases of LTS need some adjustements. Waiting also the main application, the dear OpenCPN is at 3.3 stable state.

About languages:
Yes the cooking version of Xinutop has the possibility, by an executable script to download and install any language available in Ubuntu repositories.

About save: It's not the best idea to make an image of a running OS.(tmp files, pseudo files, var files...). So a radical and sure way is to make a dd command from an another OS (may be an another Xinutop).
Other way:
Don't forget that a reset save your home directory in home-save, so you can recopy your personal datas and configs in the new home.
For users who has modified system (ex add apps), the dir datas contain all theses modifications. So you can also copy manually this dir into a reseted Xinutop.
About display saver: I come from sextant generation. So, wait 1 or 2 seconds to wake up a screen...

Bon vent belle mer
Frank

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

Hi Frank

Just some thoughts here. Marine application for low power goes hand in hand. Wondering if you've ever thought of making a ARM version of all your apps. also a HUGE add-in would be a version of Airmail for Linux to download GRIBs over SSB. Paclink exists but it's buggy and it's not a finished product. Lot's of ARM stuff going on right now though

Happy new years

Andy

Bonjour Andy,
Thanks for your feedback.
ARM: Change of processor is more than a recompilation of every program and kernel. Some software, as OpenCPN need to be rewrited to be compatible, it's a very-very big work (any OpenCPN ARM version at this day), so in the actual state, any project fur ARM.
From an other side, I have explored Android in ARM -degoogleised- tablets in Open source mode (or almost as Cyanogenmod) with good results and nice Marine software.
GRIBS: To get gribs files, it's possible for HAM's to use JPSKmail in conjonction with FLDIGI. JPSKmail run under Java, so it's not included with Xinutop (java ~ 80Mo, not in accordance with the politic size - small is beautiful !), but you can install it separatly. You can find also JPSmail written in perl, but outdated.
For 2015, a new version of Xinutop is cooking with some improvements. About 2000 downloads at this day. Any bug declared ? miraculous ?

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

Frank...
What problem do you see with OpenCPN on ARM? We are routinely producing the DEB packages for ARMHF in the PPA and people run it on various ARM boards (not all the time with 100% success, but it seems more depending on their particular distro than OpenCPN)

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

Hello Pavel,
Sorry for my error, as I was working hard on tablets and Android-TV box (cheap and also nice for no TV applications), when I received the suggestion from Andy, ARM was synonym of Android...

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

OpenCPN on ARM is very close to being complete.
Raster charts seem to work perfectly.
There are still a few problems to iron out with CM93. And other ENCs.

It would be fantastic to have an image or distribution like Xinutop working on an ARM board.

Cheers,
JM.

Bonjour NahanniV,
Thanks for your feedback and suggestion. Maybe in the future... Could you send a list of ARM devices enough powerfull to run confortably OpenCPN ? Say as an Intel Atom single core ?

Hi,

I started a thread about a standard hardware platform a while ago:

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...er-136812.html

The consensus seemed to be that the CubieTruck was best suited.

I got one, and it seems to run OpenCPN quite well. There are a few issues to work out, but it is certainly powerful enough to run the software while using only about 5W. Certainly more powerful than a "Intel Atom single core".

Cheers,
JM.

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

We are running here an Olimex A20 under Debian - no OpenGL at the moment.
Sean has the same one but he built his own image.
Little consumption, broad power input, a lot of ports.
We had to put the OS image on a bigger SD card tweaking the partition. And the charts are on second MMC in the second slot.

This system did run more than two weeks unattended gathering AIS stuff under OpenCPN. Route planning, panning zooming etc is a bit tedious but works. Monitor 22" 1920 x 1080 HDMI.
It is under 4.0.0 now

The issue for all this ARM devices/modules/products is having a stable image to run. You are adding another zillion of possible hardware and software options.
Who will be able to take care? And to answer the questions here.

If there are people to support this architectures - great.

My point is to standardize on one platform, and build a truly opensource chartplotter.

I don't expect it to be easy to decide on a platform, but It would be great if we did.

Cheers,
JM.

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

I would encourage looking for good board with 2gb memory, wifi, bluetooth, hdmi, with good opengl compatibility, maybe a VGA plug, what else?

But the board should last at least 3 years without being too outdated, and run OpenCPN well, with AIS, etc. maybe even radar?

The intel boards based on Hartwell chip have much better power savings now. Don't know how good their opengl is in these though.

The Haswell features are now in the Atom "Bay Trail" http://forwardthinking.pcmag.com/non...mance-compared

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/...-architecture/

Perhaps a mini board running Linux would be suitable? Provided the opengl is ok.

For now, not so successful with graphics for the new version:

I write the downloaded image to USB stick, using dd and try to boot from the USB. Boot seems to go normal, booting from standard mode, all seems to go fine up to the image with dolphins and "performing autostart" shows, then the display goes black, with only the mouse cursor visible on the display. Has tried with Thinkpad T42/T61, Asus eee1015pem, HP elitebook 2540P and two different stationary PC's - all same problem. All of them works perfect booting from USB with the previous version of Xinutop. - another thing: Xinutop is perfect for old low spec pc's. For the nature of Xinutop as a dedicated navigation distro, not meant to be used all the time on the internet (always root !! ) I would suggest to for now stay on ubuntu 12.04 and avoid upgrading to 14.04, but relaunch the Xinutop 16.01 based on ubuntu 12.04. Reason for this is that 12.04 seems to be more friendly for the older low spec computers that might be most suited for running Xinutop.

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

Hello Petter,

Some decades of downloads without trouble reported, it seems you are the first. Please, verify these points.

- make a md5 checksum control of your download and compare with the md5 alvailable on Tuxfamily servers.
- remake a dd on anothers key.
- make your dd on a umounted key
- try it on a computer without any other version of Xinutop installed (error in autodetection)

Other: If there is a grafic problem, it come from Linux kernel & modules or Xserver. Xinutop 16.01 is based with strictly (not modified) packages from Trusty and Linux kernels are backware compatibles. I run it on my Panasonic CF-M34 (PIII 700MHZ, 256Mo RAM - year 2003).
Internet in root mode: Not exactly (as a Puppy Linux). The user is marinux with all rights without password. As some millions of Windows users...but behind a Linux firewall. I use it every day.
You can set a password <sudo passwd marinux>.

Hoping resolve the trouble

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux Marine Updated

md5 is correct. Tried with another usb thumb drive ( kingston ) Same result.

If waiting for a while, the screen saver starts do display images, but if moving the mouse, you are back on the black screen with only the mouse coursor.

If trying the same thumb drives with previous version of Xinutop, everything is fine.
