re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

I has downloaded the new version, installed to USB and tested on several different laptops - works great.

  • check the md5 sum of your downloaded xinutop file.
  • Install to a usb using win32 image wirer (under windows) or use DD under linux.
  • If your pc is UEFI enabled, first disable UEFI mode
  • Make sure your pc is set to boot from USB first.
  • Xinutop will boot and work smooth on almost any pc made after year 2000, and even and old pentium III will work fine.

re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

Tried the latest version of Xinutop op an USB stick. Works very good and OpenGL can be switched to on (on the system here).

Done the update and the upgrade with apt update and apt upgrade. Then the starting halts and need a user name and password.

user: marinux password: xinutop

Works with GPS mouse or with data from the Raspberry Pi multiplexer.

re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

Hello,
Replaced the previous version on Linutop model2, direct dd command worked OK, partition sda1 resized to nearly 1Go, Error on loading GEODE video driver, apt-get update && apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-geode and the screen could shift from 800x600 to 1920x1080.
Heavy load on Linutop box with gps and rtl-sdr (AIS) plug-in on, but works OK.
Good job, Thanks.

3) dd if=<source.img> of=<disque_destination>
4) repose du disque

Et voila, comme on dit en anglais

Re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

Bonjour,

Quelle réactivité ! Bravo

Re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

Hi Petter and al,

Sorry for that...
This thread came to the forum at Frank's initiative after I sent him a mail in our mother's language and we went on this way.
To sum up :
My original mail asked the possibility to plan a release of Xinutop as an ISO bootable from a CD. The reason is that my on board PC is an old Sony Vaio (very robust !) and it cannot start from USB.
As a work around I have tried Plop Boot Manager : PLPBT and PLOPKEXEC both on diskette and CD media. The former freezes definitly the PC and the latter complains that "there is no Linux on USB device"...
At that point I'm tanked to have Xinutop on my boat PC !

Frank suggested to install Xinutop directly to the HDD from another PC (running Linux) by removing it from the laptop and proceeding to install with a "dd" command.

My last reply was that this approach can be performed at home (need of 2 PC's and hardware adapter) and that does not fit with one major interest of Xinutop (besides its light weight) to provide a live back-up solution in case of HDD failure.
The questions now are : "why PLPBT freezes the Vaio" and "is there a way in Xinutop image to let PLOPKEXEC know (or believe) that Xinutop contents a valid Linux". Any volunteer ?

Hope this fullfill your demand.

Fair winds to all

Re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

Hi Frank!

The running without desktop magnifier is don't a big problem.

I'm copying the img into HDD with dd, and starting. All function is perfect
in eeepc701 too!

But I'm try this:

apt-get update
apt-get install foxtrotgps viking gpsbabel qlandkartegt qgis iptraf wavemon
telnet minicom putty
...is correct.
And try the apt-get upgrade, and the autologin is damaged.
I'm try this for *Auto Login:* (...)
LooongDuck

Thanks for your feedback
autologin: It will be corrected in future version.
Operate in /etc/inittab is no more used since systemd.
After ugrade, verify if you have or create this dir:
/etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants
if you have a file "getty@tty1.service" inside, rename or delete it
restore the link to the modified autologin file
from /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants
ln -s /usr/local/configs/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@.service getty@.service

Re: Xinutop-nav, dedicated marine OS for x86

Indeed autologin has disappeared after doing the updates.

But if I use marinux as user and xinutop as password it works.

Xinutop runs fine here on several computers.

Bonjour Frank,

thanks your answer.

I'm try this:

apt-get update
apt-get install kernel-package libncurses5-dev build-essential gcc automake cmake bc git

cd /usr/src
mkdir automake
cd automake

The next step making a file with this name: autologin.c

#include <unistd.h>
int main() {execlp("login", "login", "-f", "marinux", 0);}

Save, and

gcc -o autologin autologin.c
chmod 755 ./autologin
cp ./autologin /usr/sbin

and edit the /etc/profile file and add this line:
/usr/sbin/autologin

Xinutop on tablet Xplore

OK BZS, thanks for your solution.

From Ronan

Happy to know that Xinutop run on your tablet from USB.

Main OS on SD card:

You will find in Xinutop manual all the instruction to convert Xinutop in a regular Debian OS.
But:
- If Xinutop don't run in native mode (squashfs) on your SD, there is few chances, that it run with a regular install. At what level Xinutop stop ?
- Line by line commands. You must know what you are doing (tested on a regular PC)
- Carefull to not brick you tablet.
- As Xinutop is based on Debian Jessie, It would be interesting, in first, to test an installation with a regular Jessie.

There is also very small USB keys...
