Wireless nmea2000 to OCPN

As NMEA2000 becomes more and more prevalent, the desire to have this ability to interface with OCPN wirelessly will increase. Any chance the communications options could include this ability in the future?

For direct NMEA2000 (BTW, what is it wireless NMEA2000? There is nothing like wireless J1939 CANBUS, which is what N2k is) the chance is very little, it is too vendor dependent. Support for SignalK is more than likely during the next beta cycle.

Re: Wireless nmea2000 to OCPN

I was looking for a cheap way to connect NMEA2000 to a laptop for a friend of mine. All I could find were expensive wireless adapters.

I did find a NMEA0183 to USB adapter for about $55. Just curious if there's anything about the same price for NMEA2000.

nohal, this device broadcasts nmea 2000 right? I don't think it will broadcast nmea 0183

GWB...
I don't know which device you are talking about, sorry. NMEA200 specifies not just what is transmitted, but also that it is transmitted on wire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NMEA_2000). If you want to get it to the air, you need something connected to the CAN bus, which does the conversion to something else, say a TCP or UDP stream of certain format. There is no universal standard for it.

The NMEA 2000 Gateway will translate all known NMEA 2000 sentences to NMEA 0183. These are then available via Wifi. This way iNavX, iRegatta and all the other software will continue to work even when you upgrade your system to NMEA 2000.
I think it's only half-duplex, though.

Actisense makes USB adapters for N2K networks which will put N2K datastream directly onto your computer (NGT-1 USB) or translated to 0183 (NGW-1 USB). About $200 each. Be careful to note which type of data is needed by the program you intend to use.

Systems using certain Navico plotters can be connected to a WiFi router and will output 0183 over WiFi connections. The plotters do the translation to 0183 (obviously not all N2K PGNs have equivalent 0183 sentences). I would guess you could connect directly by Ethernet too.

I use such a connection (over WiFi) to put 0183 data on an IPad for INavX. Works flawlessly, includes AIS, and was practically plug and play.

Gwb...
This device does the translation to NMEA0183. And as explicitly stated on the page you posted, it will produce data OpenCPN understands already now. Keep on mind what Dockhead said above n2k is a much richer protocol, not everything can be converted to nmea0183. If it is of any importance for you depends on what components exactly make the network on the boat.
