Windows Mobile Version ?

Hi everybody!

Does anybody know if it would be possible to port OCPN also to a Windows Mobile version (the question came up on the German Website)?

AFAIK wxWidgets wouldn't be a problem as they state on their website

... as well as several mobile platforms including Windows Mobile, iPhone SDK and embedded GTK+.
I guess the OCPN GUI will be the biggest problem, because AFAIK the actual minimum screen width for the GUI is 800px. But maybe there can be an alternative (second) GUI developed for small screen devices?

As Smartphones, Pocket-PCs etc become more and more powerful and many of them have integrated GPS ...., could be attractive.

What do you think about it, and especially the programmers?

Gunther

Gunther...

Before investing lots of effort to redesign a reduced GUI, I'd like to learn more about the target hardware platforms.

What are they? Phones, ipad thingys, GPSs, magic convergence of all of the above? Any on the market now?

Screen size? Processor? RAM size?

Just curious

now you gonna disappointing me ...

Have a look at ie. Amazon.com: pocket pc: Electronics
Sure there are also many Smartphones on the market running Windows Mobile.

Maybe for further explanation:
Using such (small) devices is not intended as use as the main device for navigation but
  • as a second device mounted near the steering ...
  • on long passages to save energy
  • as backup
  • and many more ...
Gunther

BTW: Personally I am of the opinion that the minimum screen size is that of todays Netbooks (and those may run with "normal" Windows versions).

Hi,

You can count in almost all the road navigation platforms (i.e. Mio Navigator). One can easily hack them and gain access to the system so that he can install new applications.

Opencpn is a great tool and, most important, it's free! Porting to windows mobile platforms would give it a boost in my opinion as there aren't any free navigation apps (at least with the quality and map formats' support of Opencpn)...

I have no idea about the required effort though...

Regards,
v

I know this is an old thread, but I was messing around with the GPS function on my Windows Mobile 6 phone today (a GSmart MW700), and it occurred to me that it would make a nice backup to my onboard handheld GPS. As it is, I can get lat/long/speed/distance/altitude from my phone. If there was an app that allowed me to load a bunch NOAA charts and see my position on one of them, that would be icing on the cake.

Did anyone ever make a WinMo version of OCPN? Have any other WinMo6 navigation apps surfaced? I did a lot of Googling around but haven't found the right one yet. A few that cost $100+, but nothing inexpensive or free. . . .
