Windows 8 Tablet with built-in GPS
I've installed OpenCPN on a Windows 8 tablet with built-in GPS (namely an ASUS VivoTab) and cannot get OpenCPN to acknowledge the GPS... The software itself installed perfectly and runs great, but no GPS position...
I don't see an option for it in the GPS tab...
Any suggestions?
Bill

Does the tablet GPS work in another application?

Yes, the GPS works fine in all other apps/programs that uses it (Maps, Weather, etc.)...
OpenCPN only gives the option to use Garmin, Network GPSD or AIS Port... How can I tell OpenCPN to use the internal GPS?

Bill...
You can write into that field, just fill in the port your GPS is on if it was not detected and offered in the dropdown with choices.

Thanks... But I can't figure out which COM port the GPS has been assigned to... In the Windows 8 Device Manager it lists hardware IDs and addresses and such but doesn't mention any COM ports...
I'm sure it's easy enough to figure out... eventually... but right now i'm confused...

Bill..
I think COM ports have been replaced with USB ports. Try finding out which USB port is used.

try to run some other "classic" gps app like gpsinfo rather than the Metro toys to figure out the port. Unfortunately I have not seen this latest "miracle" from Redmond, so can't actually be of much more help.

Re: Windows 8 Tablet with built-in GPS
I don't see any mention of OpenCPN not supporting Windows 8 there... What I see is that the docs are not updated to reflect W8.
The few reports we got say it DOES work on W8 and I can confirm it from the testing builds I've done on Windows 8 betas at the time they became available. What I don't know is how the stuff works on the W8 tablets with integrated gps as all the testing I've done was in a virtual machine and all the reports I've seen so far were from conventional pcs with external usb connected gps receivers.

Thanks for the tip... Unfortunately gpsinfo doesn't show any com ports... In the COM Ports dropdown it just lists "Log File:"...
I'm not using any "Metro toys" to figure out the port, I'm using the Windows Device Manager and other Windows system tools...
What I need to know is what other options do I have to put in the "NMEA Data Source" field besides COM1, COM2, etc... I have all the different addresses and IDs for the GPS unit, but OpenCPN doesn't seem to accept these...

Re: Windows 8 Tablet with built-in GPS
Bill...
You have no other choices - OpenCPN (unless you are using the latest betas) needs a serial port as a datasource on Windows.
If you managed to make any non-metro application to work, just copy the serial settings from there. But as it looks from the gpsinfo case, you will have little luck.
That the things like "Weather" and "Maps" work does not mean anything for applications like OpenCPN - Metro has a special API to access the GPS data, so the GPS does not actually have to be visible in the system at all. Unfortunately this API is not accessible for normal apps, so unless you find a way to create a virtual COM port for the GPS somehow, the things will not run very happily.

The Windows Location API is used by Metro apps as well as Desktop apps, but these desktop apps must be built using Visual Studio 2010 or Visual Studio 2012 to use the API... I've been playing with Visual Studio 2012 for a few months now but haven't touched the location API at all.
I've been searching the web all day for a virtual COM port utility that works with Windows 8 sensors, but so far I haven't had any luck... If I can't find any I think I'll try to build one myself...
Hopefully it won't get to that stage, though...

Re: Windows 8 Tablet with built-in GPS
Bill...
wish you luck. Please, keep us posted as there sure will be more people with the same problem in the future. If you start to play with the sensors, I would be personally very interested in the other sensors your device has as I have some funny uses for them.
