will this work with open cpn

we are on a jeanneau ds40 currently wintering over in tunisia after an atlantic crossing --
we use open cpn as a back up for our chartplotter -- currently open cpn resides on our laptop - and it is a bit clumbersome to use -- and we have had 2 occasions where we have had to use it

the thought was to get a tablelet and put opencpn on it and use that at the helm if need be --
i am currently in the usa and went to best buy and looked at a lot of options and was overwhelmed -- but one questions was will open cpn run on windows 8

second question does anyone have a recommendation on a tablet and no apple please -- the only thing it will be used for is open cpn and take to town for wifi when we can got get wifi on the boat -- it would need of course a port for the gps feed

i hope this make sense -- thanks for your thoughts
we will only be in the usa for 2 weeks before going back to tunisia

If you are back at Port Yasmine you might come to Marina Monastir even with a cheap Taxi so I can give you some hints. Windows 8 will work with OpenCPN.

Buy an iPad and use SeaIQ with the same charts. You'll be a lot happier.

OR, but a Samsung tablet and get MXMariner for 6.99. It works very nice and Will the developer is constantly adding stuff. Active Captain is on the way to.

Re: will this work with open cpn

I know I'll probably get run through with someones light-sabre but I've been researching this topic myself for a few months now. Not being a total computer geek and not wanting to spend oodles of money...here is what I came up with.
I ran into a guy with the sistership to mine and he looked as poor as I am. here's what he had.
Acer W-510 PC Tablet, I believe running 7 or 8. He chose it because the adapter was 110ACV to 12DCV. So he plugs it into various cig-sockets.
USB hub (good quality, gold contacts)
USB to mini USB adapter. (for adapting the tablets mini the larger USB)
Wireless mouse and keyboard. (stops gooing up the screen)
Garmin GPS puck with USB end. (not a cheap knock-off)
I priced it ll out on Amazon...$450. That is with a refurbished PC Tablet. He runs Open CPN on it and his AIS also. He demonstrated it to me. Looked pretty slick.
He put velcro on the back of it, so it can stay put in various places as well as a docking port for it.
I'm the same as you. I want a Nav system that I can use for Internet also. Seems like the way to go.
