Why .xpm format user icons?

Why does OpenCPN use icons in the .xpm format?
Is it possible to extend support for the .gif, .ico and .ani formats?

If so, one can create really nifty user icons such as animated icons. These icons can even be created to replicate the actual timing of flashing lights. For example, here is a flashing Cardinal symbol - although in .gif format;

It's called legacy...

(Old code that no one has had the energy to work on)

Until no, that is. PNG icons will be supported post 3.0 as a result of a major new feature that I just submitted 5 minutes ago... More on that later

Good idea, if they can do so. I would favor this.

Personally I find animated icons very distracting, but as long as 'switch animated icons OFF' choice is included in setup menu I am fine with the idea
